I don’t think any details of the recovery of those two episodes has ever been mentioned, or did I just miss that bit because MBW was a bit far for me to go? They were from a foreign country. The Steptoe can was in a pretty poor state. I'll see if I can find a pic. Phil's is one of three prints known to exist, but his is the only one back at the BBC. Rag Trade was almost pristine although tainted by a hair in the film recorder gate which comes in part way through the ep and stays through until the end. It's not bad, but spoils an otherwise perfect FR. Paul Thanks for the clarification Paul.

I guess the other question regarding Steptoe and Son is if Phil has found an episode that previously existed in a poor quality print in an unmade foreign country, did he find other episodes in that unnamed foreign country that are already extant and not at the BBC in poor condition?

Phil's is one of three prints known to exist, but his is the only one back at the BBC. I assumed that the off air caring was the only known recording. Is there a reason why the other 2 prints were never made available for a copy to be made?

I originally read the 50 cans as being back at the BBC but it's actually "in safe hands" so the remaining films are still under negotiation to be returned I assume? Richard, The films are very safe and available to the BBC et al. That wasn't the case a year ago or during the past 40 years. Paul Thanks for the clarification Paul. To go back to my original question - has anyone checked if the copy of Godfrey's Cottage from this collection has the same abrupt edit I noticed at the end of the "skip recovery" version?

Didn't the BBC issue Godrey's Cottage on DVD? And didn't the BBC air the episode just recently?

Yes that was from the "skip recovery" copy found outside the film studio that made the original feature, it was the print they were given for reference, I believe.

There were 20 Likely Lads TV episodes made (10 currently known to survive) and James Bolam adapted 16 of these for radio. All 3 TV episodes recovered in the 21st century have been from the 4 that were not adapted. Coincidence? If I were a tabloid newspaper I would pay an 'expert' to 'calculate' that the chances of that are 1 in 285. It seems that the radio episodes do all exist, but as far as I know only as low-quality small digital files. The only episode which is not now represented by a TV or radio version is series 3 episode 5, The Razor's Edge (though apparently the TV soundtrack exists).

I'm sure you know about the online archive of the radio shows, but in case not (and for the benefit of anyone else reading this) they're all here: fourble.co.uk/podcast/llrbjbAre any of the surviving TV off airs easily available or do they just do the rounds on collectors circuits? I would love a comprehensive DVD box set of the 60s series (or combined with the 70s show and the movie for the ultimate experience) collating all 10 existing episodes in one place, the Christmas night with the stars bit, all 16 radio shows (or 29 counting the 70s shows) and all the off air audios that exist, but of course it's very unlikely. We can dream though. At least most of that stuff will soon be out there in one form or another now.

Excellent episode and presented in (to my non-expert eyes and ears) very decent quality. So delighted to have a chance to watch it. "A Star is Born" is tomorrow's treat.

Mine arrived on Wednesday. Whilst perhaps not up to the amazing standard of the Who b/w releases (no Vidire, alas) the print quality is more than acceptable. Great to effectively watch two 'new' episodes after all these years. Superb restoration job on the movie too - colour grading, detail, all wonderful.

Terry and Bob take part in a talent show, and Terry considers giving us his version of Donovan's 'Colours'. Could anyone let me know what they eventually perform?
