Hi all,
I was wondering what you thought of the idea of recreating missing episodes Doctor Who episodes using deepfakes.
For those who are unaware of what a deepfake is, here are a couple of examples
Furthermore, is it possible or desirable to use this technology to recreate existing episodes in HD and in colour minus any potential fluffs or technical mistakes whilst offering the originals at the same time?.
Thanks

Theoretically you could replace characters in existing episodes and as per Tom Baker's suggestion, you could replace Leela with some talking vegetables. Or indeed Mel.
Or do interesting stuff like have Alexander Lukashenko as the Doctor.
I'm being silly.

Yeah I posted in another thread i'm going to have a go at trying this when I have the time which isn't this month alas. But if someone else whats to give it a go before hand I think it's an excellent idea as the quality required to make a black and white low resolution missing episode is easily possible with this.

Would it be OK to alter Jamie's hemline?

Heh it would indeed require a copy of the costumes from the era, but the good news is that I'm a seamstress.

Didn't Levine do that with Planet of Giants to recreate the missing material of Parts 3 and 4?

Has anybody tried this with small bit of a missing episode between two or three telesnaps? I would be interested to see what someone could come up with for a minute of, say, "The Highlanders".

You'd end up with three stills of Patrick Troughton's face super imposed on Patrick Troughton's face.
Deepfakes involve taking an actor and replacing them using images of another actor, you still need to map out the movements in between for it to work. You really aren't looking for completely missing stories for this technology (at least at this point in time), you want something that's mostly there with footage of the entire cast to be replicated.

Thank you for the explanation. I was hoping to be able to super-impose Troughton on another actor mimicking his actions based upon the recons. My idea seems like it is years away.

It's possible, the problem as I understand it is that you need a lot of footage to create the effect. So while you might be able to reconstruct Troughton, you may be struggling with guest stars who don't have that same amount of screen time on offer.

Well I gues there you've got two ways to go. If they have other existing material from around the same time period, (they appeared on other programmes which have survived) you can use that as reference. Or you could try to find a good lookalike I suppose. The other option is to recast the part.
