My archive has many from 1988- as i always kept the idents on the front of recordings, these are on VHS and can be transfered to Blu-ray HD here. There are over 1000 VHS tapes stored. Im sure all the idents i will have are not missing due to the dates. I have a few 1980 VHS recordings but mainly in the summer.
Every winter i pull a few VHS and transfer them, the process is made not easy by panasonic, as the tape is played at 1:1 and the Blu-ray disc is needlessly written at 1:1 when it easily could be written at High Speed [1 byte difference] Then the H264 reconvert is also 1:1 so it takes 9 hours [3x 1:1] + 3 minutes [high speed transfer back after changing the 1 byte to make it a DR direct recording] to do a 3 hour tape.
The few original Boss Cats i have from the last 1988 showing are now on hard drive and disc.

I found another instance of the 1978 BBC2 Xmas ident earlier this week on Umatic. Interestingly, it’s a much tighter shot than the one Kaleidoscope found on Betamax last year, that is to say, the camera is zoomed much further in to the buglers. The TV Museum will uploading it on Sunday which will be it’s 40th anniversary of TX.

PS I gave a presentation of such idents at the BFI Missing Believed Wiped show, three years ago.

I did a post on this very subject back on 2016 back on what I could find out (which unfortunatly wasn't much). I put this up on a web forum called the TV lounge which unfortunatly no longer exists and with it all the posts (I checked up using the wayback engine but got nowhere). However I did manage to save off a copy using firefox at the time - and an article from the 'television' magazine back in 1990. There are also these two youtube videos; BBC1 (1967-2015) www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3wmpGOwzHEBBC2 (1967-2015) www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBLw_oveNkUNote that the BBC1 youtube video has a mistake and starts off saying "BBC2 CHRISTMAS IDENTS 1967 TO 2015" - ! ljones

I wonder if other Christmas idents were recorded as part of live tx feeds from respective television stations; it would be interesting if any examples of Christmas presentation existed besides the one for the Kinks Christmas Concert.

Even as a 10 month old baby I was fascinated by Christmas idents, here's a photograph of myself staring at the television, when the 1990 BBC1 Christmas Ident was showing. Apparently my father snapped this at the exact time when the Only Fools and Horses episode 'Rodney Come Home' was airing. I found a recording of this exact continuity from the same time this photo was taken: www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3Mb89bD5QoAttachments:

The BBC2 idents from 1977 & 1981 exist in broadcast quality for this reason. That’s all until 1987.

I was watching footage earlier from a BBC News Report made in 1978, and it features footage of the BBC2 Christmas Ident from that year. The footage starts at 0:12 and includes behind scenes footage of the continuity suite with Richard Whitmore doing the announcer duties that afternoon, I believe this is from the very first TX of the Christmas Ident from the 23/12/1978, which ironically enough also features the debut of the new BBC2 theme that would be common place the following year. So this is the 3rd known piece of footage of the 1978 BBC2 Christmas Ident, which before last year was considered lost. Also towards the end of the clip, there is behind the scenes footage of the BBC1 Christmas Ident being constructed, literally minutes before it's first TX. Here's a link to it, uploaded by Gary Rodger: www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6iDmjgMNMY

i think i preferred the christmas idents from london but during the mirror globe era BBC1 scotland had the most eye-catching idents at this time but when the COW globe was introduced in 1985 their christmas idents from the globe as a jack-in-the-box & christmas lights over inbetween the globe were a bit lame.it's a shame the BBC1 xmas gift logo with the robin going round and round (which was my favourite xmas ident growing up) was only seen across the UK in the morning and afternoon as english viewers only saw it at night. one bizarre question when the idents were broadcast live over the continuity announcements in the mid 1980s were the snowmen of 1984 and the robin of 1985 were not moving live when one programme on BBC1 was about to start? i hope they were working all the time inbetween.check out the brilliant last roll of the snowmen when BBC1 closed down on boxing day 1984 when the light switched off on them after the last note of the national anthem as it was the last time we see them on screen that year.and how come the BBC1 COW globe appeared over the national anthem on christmas day 1985 and 1986 when the christmas idents were shown during the day?
