Some years ago I was able to get my hands on a cache of n1500, n1700, SVR, Betamax, etc videos. Thanks to the dedication and hard work of Kal, my tapes have been successfully preserved.
To be honest, I only moved to the UK in 2004, I have a life long interest in British television, but a lot of my exposure to it, before about 1986, was second hand -- just whatever ended up on a domestic tape converted from PAL or whatever aired in California on PBS.
I was lucky enough to visit the UK several times between 1986 and 2003, and always enjoyed watching whatever I could find on.
Of course, sod's law, since moving here in 2004,I've largely gone off modern telly entirely.
ANYWAY, that's all a very long winded way to say that some of these programmes will be very well known to all of you, yet charming and curious to me.
I'd love to know more about these programmes, if there is anything unique or interesting about them, and most of all, just to have fun as I slowly make my way through these.
If you are on twitter, I'll be posting tiny, very short, seconds long clips, everyday for awhile.
But would love to discuss them here too.
First off, I had a big smile because the first tape started with the Thames television ident. Something I have considerable nostalgia for.
And what was the programme?
It was World Snooker, with Dickie Davies, original tx date 18th Jan 1978, 23:30 England versus the Rest of the World
I really don't have a grasp yet on what's on them all, except of course for the missing Samuel Tweet episodes I found. And I think there might have been one or two other missing items and some rare gems?
Anyway, anyone want to say anything before I press on?
Cheers

Cheers That was the former Wednesday Special slot, I believe.

Another fun weirdness is an edition of New Faces. It features a band called Climax amongst others, and someone on Twitter said it might be the Climax Blues Band. But I've yet to confirm that.
I'm not sure of the transmission date. I'm assuming KAL would have checked to see if this was missing or not known to exist previously, quite a few editions of New Faces are missing. So guess I'll contact Chris Perry and ask him. I notice that the New Faces is separated out from most the rest of the pile, and put with the Samuel Tweets, so perhaps this is a sign it was actually missing?
Would be fun to think I had discovered something of New Faces. So I'll find out.
Added a very short clip yesterday on my twitter, if anyone would like to see a bit of it.

(I'm in the US, yet have a love for British TV too) We are probably very similar then! I'm originally from California myself. New Faces was the show which launched Lenny Henry's career and is seen as sort of a landmark in British television history.

It can't be the Climax Blues Band in New faces can it? I thought they started in the 60's?

Fantastic news about the missing New Faces footage, whats the link to your twitter account? I'm ukoddball on twitter I have started up a youtube channel, but I'm not too happy with camera copying the clips. It just is rubbish quality, and I feel it does the philips recordings a disservice, as it makes them look a bit rubbish, when actually I find the quality quite surprising. Likely due to the speed of the tape. Anyway I'm working on a way to just record off a screen, I did try this out for a short clip from The Krotons, but the quality was very choppy. Should have it all ironed out soon, and uploads coming up. Most recently I posted a few clips from an episode of the Generation Game, circa September 1976 and a piece of television continuity More to come!

If your trying to get video out of a Philips N1500/1700 ..and you have a tower/desktop PC, then connecting an old old tuner card to the antenna socket should do the job like this. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AverMedia-TV-FM-tuner-S-Video-Audio-in-out-HL2-V0-94V-2x-CD-Discs/262694664149?epid=2279943350&hash=item3d29d277d5:g:aBAAAOSw44BYKlX-:rk:3:pf:0If that is too obsolete for your machine.. you will need something like this to plug into the antenna socket. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RF-to-AV-Analog-TV-Receiver-Converter-Modulator-Power-Adapter-USB-w-AV-Cable/323504249523?hash=item4b525b1ab3:m:m-ndhax9To7RR35suSfPpQA:rk:22:pf:0It's important that if your getting blurry eyes looking at Ebay lists that you look for an 'RF to AV' adapter and not a 'AV to RF' adapter as they are popular and obviously do the reverse job. They seem universal but you could check with the vendor that they are suitable for imputing the UHF Pal 'I' system that the UK Philips will give out. You have not finished yet, once the signal has been converted to video base band you will need something to get it into your computer ....something like this which has software.. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Composite-RCA-A-V-S-Video-To-USB-Converter-Recorder-Capture-For-PC-PS3-Xbox-B7B0/183319785860?hash=item2aaeb5f184:g:DuUAAOSw2j9bOdcG:rk:10:pf:0hope that is of some help?

Ugh... those capture dongles are pretty poor, speaking from experience. If you can find one, and it's true you can't always, try and get a second hand Canopus ADVC series box. I have the ADVC100 which is the low end of the series but still head and shoulders above these dingle-dangle jobs. Trouble is you'll need a Firewire/IEEE1394 interface port or card to plug it into.

It seems that is is possible, well for those who know what they're doing anyway, to open the machine and put in a composite video-out at the back. So then it doesn't have to go over the antenna cable. Some models may already have these ports, but I guess it will be a so-called "DIN" socket.
