A friend of mine has told me that an announcement has been made that there will be a newly animated Dr Who episode shown at this year's Missing Believed Wiped event in December. Anyone else heard this and any idea what this episode will be? I've read rumours to this effect, e.g. on Roobarbs. If true, I find it a baffling decision. Why show a cartoon-style reconstruction of a missing episode of Doctor Who at an event dedicated to the recovery of missing episodes from all programmes? I'm a big fan of Doctor Who and happy to buy reconstructions of this type when they are made commercially available, but I'd much rather watch something at MBW that I wouldn't otherwise have a chance to see. That said, if it were a case of reconstructing an episode by extracting additional information from existing visual material, analogous to colour recovery from chromadots, I would find that much more acceptable. (Examples of colour-recovered material have been shown at previous MBW events.) Don't get me wrong: I'll attend the showing if I can get a ticket. But I do think that, if the rumour is true and it's just a cartoon, then this isn't the right thing for MBW to do. Time will tell, I suppose.

On further reflection: perhaps showing a recently completed animation could be seen as an opportunity to reflect on the hugely important contribution made by the late Graham Strong, who made (and kept!) high-quality audio recordings of most of the missing Doctor Who episodes. If so, then yes, I can certainly see the point of that.

Anyone else heard this and any idea what this episode will be? If it is shown then it will most likely be a Macra episode as it pretty much an open secret that that story is coming soon as an animated story. It seems odd that the BBC would use MBW as a platform to announce its next animated classic series release. I think its a placeholder for something else.

It’s possible - although I have absolutely nothing to substantiate it - that there could have been some sort of “recovery”, I’m not suggesting a complete story or even an episode but there are probably some telesnaps still to be found, there could be film inserts or off air footage or maybe footage taken of location filming. If there are, and again it’s supposition, episodes being animated then why not give a “teaser”? Knowledge of it would then be rapidly promulgated throughout fandom.

I just can't see the BBC announcing an animation at MBW, especially as they don't seem to announce anything missing episode related until its ready for DVD or Blue ray and that BFI members tend to dislike Doctor Who fans and won't be happy with fans coming to see a cartoon Doctor Who.

This MBW event is about Phil Morris and inflating his huge ego. If there has been a find then i doubt its got anything to do with him. If i was a betting man i would say an orphan has been recovered from a collector but then Phil won't be happy with a missing doctor who upstaging his comedy stuff.

Well it's there in black and white...but is it WOF3,a whole new episode or just a few minutes worth? If it's anything to do with Phil Morris then my money's on a WOF3 animation in advance of a WOF Special Edition, probably being released just before christmas or in the new year.Still,I'm not complaining-I've loved all the animations so far.

Lots of things it could be. If Nigeria has been thoroughly checked with nothing else found it could be Wheel.

surely it's not a coincidence that a lot of this stuff aired close together in Nigeria? e.g. DW, It's Lulu

Film cans were moved around in specially designed containers that held certain numbers of cans and the shipping cost was probably the same whether it was full or empty. So, imagine that a standard sized container held, say, six cans but you’ve sold a four part story. You then offer the purchaser another two programmes so that they make the best of their budget. That’s probably how things like the Sky at Night ended up in weird and wonderful places.
Everything yields to logistics 😀
