I find that Tony Joe White and Joe South cover similar musical territory - a kind of bridge between Elvis and rock music.
TJW added a touch of Tom Jones into that as well.
R.I.P. Tony Joe White.
P.S. stevej - the TJW performance on the 'BBC In Concert' was quite something.

I must admit I wasn't really aware of TJW until I came across the 'BBC In Concert', which looks and sounds great (it was such a watchable series). Rightly or wrongly I tend to think of TJW as the male counterpart to Bobbie Gentry. Lyrically they seem to plough a similar furrow, setting their evocative vignettes of life in the deep south against a funky musical backdrop.

Yes I can see the overlap with Bobbie Gentry.

By coincidence I read today in TJW's obit that he was inspired to start writing songs about life and local characters after hearing Bobbie Gentry's 'Ode To Billie Jo' on the radio.
