It's hard to believe she is no longer with us, as she was always young in any part she had.
I think the original pilot was put to one side as it was considered not up to standard...wasn't the Invisible Man replaced as the first one was a bit clumsy ? IIRC. The same thing happened to Upstairs Downstairs but being on VT it was probably wiped.

I had assumed Upstairs Downstairs had it's pilot remade as it was made during the ITV colour strike, & LWT decided it was important to set the scene for any export packages. IIRC the last series had some extra episodes to make up the number of colour episodes for a syndication package.

Having binge rewatched Upstairs Downstairs, ironically the first episode IMHO is one of the weakest, to many pointless manic scenes of rushing about, the acting was more "arch" than normal. Maybe the original version of episode one was even worse & it was reshot for more than the b/w camera issue. On the other hand perhaps the cast found it difficult to motivate themselves for the reshoot. Perhaps we will never know....

On the other hand perhaps the cast found it difficult to motivate themselves for the reshoot. Perhaps we will never know.... Yes the second pilot was shot so that the plot could go straight to the colour eps and omit the B/W ones if no one wanted them in the future. Reputedly in the first shoot the characters had not found their feet..Hudson needed to be a bit more 'Scottish' Mrs Bridges a bit more cuddly, lighting not right etc ..not saying that was exactly it but it was that type of thing. The controller of LWT was under pressure to get LWT a hit, it had ATV mocking it's efforts who were still a bit peeved about loosing the London franchise- apparently on seeing the first pilot he thought he had a complete turkey on his hands and decided to ignore it,as obviously the project had been committed and still had to be delivered. Meanwhile after a shaky start the filming progressed and as we know the characters developed into the much loved ones we all remember now. You can understand the controller's anxieties with the first series (which saw it go out eventually in the Sunday graveyard slot of the 'Sunday Night Theatre' strand) as LWT had previously put out a quality colour costume drama series called 'Wicked Women' in the same late night Sat/Sun Night Theatre (this was often used as a tester to see if a production had the legs to be a series) this sank without trace after 6 episodes. .
