Paul, this is fascinating. I am too young (then 5) to remember Bleak House but what truly great find. Dickens adaptations form my memories of mainly sunday afternoon television. I think the earliest serial I can recall was the early sixties adaptation of the Old Curiousity Shop. Was the brilliant Patrick Troughton in that as Quilp? (Talking of Troughton when oh when will we get a DVD of Paul of Tarsus?). You also mention Susan Hampshire's Katy. I remember Katy on a swing in a barn, falling off, being hit by the swing and lying unconscious. I missed the next episode so never did find out what happened to her. Keep finding the lost treasures of television Paul.

Interesting. I'll have to look up a few references; I avoided Man of Straw because I thought it was a grim Germanic drama. "Quaint?",eh?
The review refers to "sozzled rag-and-bottle man Krook (Wilfred Brambell)", which sounds like typecasting. Though perhaps it's not Wilfrid Brambell...

'Man of Straw' is made by the performance of Derek Jacobi. I had no knowledge of it until Derek mentioned it during the interview we did for the 'I, Claudius' DVD. He was convinced that the BBC had wiped it. They hadn't. Very studio bound, overlit, but he carries it. 'Bleak House' has to be the highlight of that haul of the Cyprus material although, perhaps not the most significant which must be 'Z Cars'. Knowing who acquired the episodes, I am amazed that another set hasn't turned up elsewhere. Paul

I really want to track down 'Smugglers Bay'. Fondly remembered by Frazer Hines who stars and Patrick Troughton appears in most eps. And yes, he was Quilp! Regarding Katy, I can't actually recall which episodes I found. There were two or three and I'm pretty sure one was ep 8. I don't know much about it other than it was an adaptation of 'What Katy Did' I think. I'll have to check with Perivale. Paul

@paul, I had no idea that was one of your Cyprus finds! So I just want to say, many thanks for that, and great that it has got a release.

I was unaware it still exists. Hopefully we can get out even if aired on TV as a Christmas or easter special.
