Hi!
I am starting the Herculean task of rewriting my book on Thank Your Lucky Stars.
Since I wrote it I have come across quite a bit of material on the show. This is from people who worked on the show, newspapers, music mags, rediscovered video and audio, people writing down running orders at the time etc.
I can also state what songs were performed on various editions. I am also going to have an educated guess at what was performed by looking at the release dates for singles at the time of each show.
I am hoping to include some more pictures and would like to do brief biographies of the dozens of minor pop stars that appeared that generally slip through the radar.
So if you have any info on the show, pleas feel free to post it on this thread. I am particularly interested in any references in things like the N.M.E., Melody Maker etc. as I don't have access to those.
In the old days I spent many an hour looking things up in the old Birmingham central library, but as I have only visited the new one twice, I will mainly be working at home or online.
If you have any bright ideas on new sections or chapters I could write about, again, please feel free to post them here.
A big thank you already to William McGregor who has provided some fantastic info.
Cheers
Kev

Hi Kev, Many thanks for your kind words on the info I have provided in the past regarding Thank Your Lucky Stars. I can go back to trawling through my collection of old NME's, Melody Makers etc and see if there are any references that I think might have been missed? For any newish forum members that might have missed my previous TYLS posts they can be found on this old thread of mine starting on page 11. here's the link... missingepisodes.proboards.com/thread/8377/offer-research-nmes-disc-show?page=11

Particularly good would be any reference to the last one in June 66 and the one off special they did at the end of 66.

This is from the NME dated 27th May 1966...
NME Exclusive Beatles in last 'Lucky Stars' but not for London viewers.....The Beatles will top the bill in the final edition of ABC-TV's "Thank Your Lucky Stars" on Saturday June 25th. They are now confirmed- as forecast last week-for BBC1's Top of the Pops on Thursday, June 9th. In both cases, they will be seen in film sequences, actually shot by Brian Epstein's own film company.
However, London-area viewers will not see the Beatles performance in "Lucky Stars." The last show in the series that ATV is transmitting is on Sunday June 12th (elsewhere June 11th) which means that viewers in this region will miss the final two editions. Herman's Hermits have been booked for the final edition on Saturday June 25th also set are the Ivy League, Ruby Miller and as previously reported Roy C. Former comperes Keith Fordyce and Peter Murray will also appear.

There exists an ex 2" VT copy here of selected "crash recorded" (ie sloppily edited) segments from TYLS and other beatles performances, as probably aired/inserted into an Australian re-broadcast a brief discussion with someone seemed to point to the fact the material isnt considered "missing", but its unclear as to if it being 2" VT origination may be of higher quality than what exists elsewhere - all other copies circulating online appear to be ex VHS

There's a lot of detail here about the songs "performed", though I can't guarantee it's 100% accurate! ohboy.org.uk/thank-your-lucky-stars/Good luck with the book, if I find anything else I'll let you know.

I would have thought Oz TV would have imported them as telerecordings simply because the UK was still on 405 lines and OZ was on 625 lines. Meanwhile here is a bit fluff....but a delightfully slick production as usual from Tony Hatch and the very professional Breakaways ..not sure if it is missing or not Nov/63 www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAsvjOnCZ9wWell the interesting thing is that the footage appeared to be filmed from a tv screen - and you could see the horizontal line structure very clearly, so its likely if there was no other way to convert one standard to another that is indeed how it was overcome!

That's great! What a lovely website! I never knew they did one as a Big Night Out special. We can add Gene Pitney, Town Without Pity, to the surviving clips list.

We can add Gene Pitney, Town Without Pity, to the surviving clips list. Are you sure that clip is from TYLS? Doesn't look like one of their sets to me.

Yes it is I believe.
It was shown on the Rock and Roll Years in the 80's on the B.B.C.
It's listed in the kaleidoscope guide as extant and I saw it at one of their conventions.
The whole section that survives is a bit longer with a snippet of Barbara Murray and Brian Matthew in a tuxedo!

Thanks; it didn't look like the TYLS I remembered (can't remember Brian Matthew being dressed so formally either ...)

Those two look more like the TYLS I remember - perhaps the show had a bigger budget earlier on to cover more substantial sets with extras in the background - plus a dinner jacket for Brian M. ?

Yes, they appeared on 21st March 1964. I note IMDb has credited the wrong "Coasters" in this case -- I'll submit a correction.
