"The films are no safer in the hands of Kaleidoscope than the collector who sold them and you seem to be ignoring the fact that the collector in question has been very open about what was in his collection".
An Ebay seller is selling his rare tv print collection to anyone worldwide who wants it, and describing most or all of the prints on Ebay as 'missing television'. The seller had, as far as we know, not digitised them prior to bunging them on Ebay.
Kaleidoscope buys them, and in desperation persuades the seller to stop listing more on Ebay and instead to sell the prints to them directly.
And you say the prints are in no safer hands now than the situation they were in before Kaleidoscope bought them?
As safe with an owner who bungs them on an Ebay 'Buy it Now' as they would be in the Kaleidoscope collection.
Just about the most insulting thing you can say of an organisation that does it's level best to fulfil the aims of this forum.
I'm now lost for words, really.

May i break up this spat briefly to make an impartial comment that it saddens me deeply to see two of this community's most prominent and respected members embroiled in such acrimony. The simple point i want to make is this. Our community is getting smaller year on year, and that decline will accelerate given the nation's fast changing demographic. It won't be long before future generations dismiss 50's,60's and 70s TV as an irrelevance consigned again to the basement as ancient history. For that reason we should all be striving to unite our shrinking community instead of dividing it. Let's all focus on the bigger picture and work together! Hear hear! Such an inside conflict is hard to understand for anyone of the audience (the fans of old UK TV). And also I repeat, for many people it doesn't make any difference if the film is in a private cupboard or an institution's: If they can't buy/see it, it might as well be lost. Case in point the many 1948 Show episodes that came back, most of which came to nothing. This is not meant to choose Paul's side, because Kal on the other hands is doing what they can to show these programs at events and keep them alive.

I have felt that change more keenly than most recently. I made three good friends on joining this and two other forums in 2003. They have all died in the last few years and were no great age. My best friend an avid Australian collector died aged just 58 a few months ago. I revisited the once bustling 1950's themed Whirligig website recently to give them an update on my 'Oh Boy!' documentary only to find it almost deserted. The most active thread is the RIP section and was saddened to see many members who i chatted with just 6-7 years ago have all passed on. Let's all focus on the bigger picture and work together! Obviously Paul I completely agree with this sentiment and I have a great deal of respect for Simon and the aims of Kaleidoscope. But I think certain realities must be accepted and one of those is the rights of the film collectors and their freedom to exercise them. Whether we like it or not, the broadcasters created this situation by getting rid of their films in the first place. Film collectors have saved these films, looked after them and made them safe for decades. They shouldn't be criticised for selling those films on to anyone prepared to pay the price being asked. That is a separate point entirely to the one I made earlier in the thread, which is that Kaleidoscope needs to show some clarity when describing their 'discoveries'. That is the only point I made. Simon keeps pressing his point. I just want clarity. In that regard, I'm locking the thread. Keeping it open will just allow a circular argument to continue. Paul
