I managed to get through watching the new episode and without being a riveting watch it did have some elements of classic soap opera with an impending engagement, the death of an elderly grandfather and a shotgun wielding Irishman (albeit played in a comedy vein)....but there was not a train wreck, plane crash or murder in sight. What stood out for me was that I had completely forgotten about the character of the Cooper's youngest son Lance played by Raymond Hunt and that the ubiquitous Megs Jenkins was in it playing her usual role of the devoted middle aged wife and home maker. Also I had never noticed that Maggie Fitzgibbon made little attempt to disguise her Australian accent.

I've updated the Wikipedia page so that it matches the info in Lost Shows, and included a screenshot of the correct opening titles.
There was a short clip from it shown at the recent Kaleidoscope Event (part of the Martin Loach collection) that piqued my interest. It's a shame that we're missing 99% of it...

I'm not 100% sure that we can take anything Wikipedia says as gospel, John. For a start, they have a still of the supposed opening title in their Newcomers entry, but it's not from the BBC soap - it's from a US documentary film of the same name. Check it out: The UK Newcomers had it's theme taken out of John Barry's session cupboard recorded circa 1962. The theme didn't exactly come out of John Barry's session cupboard. "Fancy Dance" was a single (45) released on the Ember label in 1963. The BBC seemed to have discovered it from a John Barry e.p. released by Ember in 1964, called "The Loneliness of Autumn", which also included the theme. Incidentally, the sax was played by John Scott, who later became an accomplished composer of TV and film scores.

Having just seen this thread I didn't realise that there was an episode on Youtube. I just watched it at the sad thing is that I remembered a lot of the characters from when I originally saw it. My only disappointment was no Campbell Singer who I had the most memories of.
Several years ago I did give Kaleidoscope some old reel to reel tapes which included an episode of The Newcomers. However; I just checked the missing shows website to see what exists for the series and I didn't see any mention of the audio existing for the episode I gave them; perhaps the quality was too bad. I don't know which episode number it was but am pretty sure it was a new years eve episode.

Hi Glenn,
Kaleidoscope have asked me to assure you that the asset is indeed with Kaleidoscope but without a tx date that’s why its not showing on TV Brain.
But the problem is no tx date so they cant log it on TV Brain or the database next to a tx date.
It is digitised in the archive as...
The Newcomers (Unknown Episode)/ BBC 1 / ? / ??/??1967 / 22' 38" / ? / Robert Brown, June Bland and Judy Geeson / An episode of 'The Newcomers' probably broadcast in the first half of 1967. Very rare to come across any recorded material from 'The Newcomers'/ 1 7/8 ips / The Newcomers (1967).

Thank you for the information; I was worried that the quality turned out to be so bad that it was not worth saving. I must confess that it does feel rather good to have been able to provide the only copy of a programme that exists even if it just the audio. A real shame that so little of the series exists; as I said earlier I remembered so many of the characters when I watched the episode. Only recently I watched an episode of Softly Softly and when I saw one of the actors in it my immediate thought was that he had been in The Newcomers.

I do recall an episode - probably late '67 or early '68 - where Jimmy Harker (David Janson) was at a hip party and either took acid (or was spiked) and imagined that the snake design on someone's tie was real and about to strike out at him so he leaped out of an upstairs window and seriously injured himself. I'm not really into soap operas but this sounds fantastic. Can it get any more 1960s than this? I wish this episode was one of the 5 that existed.

Reviving this thread to thank everyone for contributing their memories (and one audio recording) of this series! I am into (mostly non-U.S.) soaps and The Newcomers and Compact top my wish list for more episodes to surface. It's a great loss that they aren't available in total like Coronation Street and others. There might not be more than a small fringe market for complete runs of twice weekly or more programs but I'm one of them... having even got the entire set of eight Emmerdale circa 1989-1991 a company in Finland issued. If only the strange man in the call box at I.M. Foreman's junkyard (in Totter's Lane) could've ferried a generous supply of video tapes from our era back to at least November 1963! The last year or so of The Newcomers has a strong Doctor Who connection with Debra Watling and her father Jack Watling as members of the new family replacing the Collins'. Must've started not long after The Web Of Fear and Fury From The Deep. Only five... it's criminal really... Special request: I'd be appreciative if anyone would be willing to embed what is available of The Newcomers via Youtube here (like with the 'false' opening from another show entirely posted here earlier) I am really unable to sit through, even muted, all the horrible quack marketing ads they have before even a short clip will play (four minutes of ads for an under six minute clip?). Embedded I seem to not have to sit through anything.

Thank you very much Kev! I'm sorry if I came off a bit of a whinger, had just sat through one minute to see another three minute ad start loading right after, and they often insert ads randomly too which can come mid-word in the video you want to watch.

You didn't come across like that at all Rebecca, so don't worry! Happy to be able to help, and yes I agree with you about the ads which can be really frustrating!
