I have several memories of watching Troughton as a 5/6 year old. I do recall one episode that I found so boring that I soon gave up on it, even though DW was a programme not to be missed. From what little I can remember, I'm pretty sure it was Space Pirates!

It's funny, I remember watching every serial in the last Troughton season except for..... the Space Pirates, I can't remember a thing about it, I wonder why? LOL. Mind you, it doesn't necessarily mean that it was a poor serial, I can't remember anything about Fury either which looks to have been brilliant, while remembering Evil, Snowmen and Web in detail which were all great.

How did you find watching Web again after so many years? Were there bits you'd forgotten about or bits you remembered surprisingly well?

My over all impression from viewing Web the first time around was that, IMHO, it was the greatest serial to date and as time went on of them all, and up to the point of viewing it again I felt the same. To be honest I was a bit nervous, would the memory's of a 5 year old stand up after all this time? Well, it did, I thought it was fantastic to be honest. I was surprised how much I remembered accurately, the battle scenes, skulking about in tunnels, the individual army characters. I thought the overall pace was good with little or no padding. It surprised me how posh Ann Travers was, but then again most people on the BBC spoke like that then, LOL. The Doctor's "Anti Welsh" comment's directed at Pte Evans were difficult to hear, and would certainly offend today, but of their time, I guess. Thankfully it's still my favourite serial by some distance . Can't wait to see Evil, Snowmen and Fury if and when they turn up. Interestingly I can remember Snowmen as well as Web, (must be the Yetis made an impression), long sections of Evil and nothing much of Fury. Still gutted about the loss of Episode 3 and hopeful it is recovered.

IIRC The Space Pirates was originally a 4 parter that had to be stretched to 6 out due to the various script commissioning problems the production team had in season 6. Yes it felt padded and the film excerpts for episode 1 indicate a slowed pace to my eye.

Yes it felt padded and the film excerpts for episode 1 indicate a slowed pace to my eye. Aside from it being brought forward to replace, among other things, the 3rd Yeti story, I believe some of the padding pacing of "The Space Pirates" happened because it was written and filmed during the moonshots. I vividly recall being a bratty, hyper-active, impatient 4 year old who watched the TV transfixed for hours on end while I listened to Apollo 11 and Houston communicating about small adjustments to make for the trip out and the trip back. Thus, it would be trivially easy to turn a 4 episode story like "The Space Pirates" on the grounds of "realism." Sure, it's dull, but it could have been "The Prison in Space" instead.

I haven't seen all of the missing episodes, but of the ones I've seen, These are what I think the expectations will be:
Marco Polo: As this is the 60s story with the most stills, the reconstructions do a good job telling the story as it is. Honestly, I think that if it were found, people would just be like "Oh, is that it?" The only parts that would really benefit from being found would be the fight scenes (especially ones in episode 5 and episode 7). So I think it would be a bit of a let down apart from episode 7 which I think would be surprisingly good as it would give us the duel scene, the most fancy sets, and the backgammon game.
Mission to the Unknown: Definitely a hidden gem. It often gets overlooked because it's really short and doesn't have any of the regular cast, but it still holds up. The cast that it does have is small which means that there is more time to develop them. Really, I would love it if this episode were found, and I think it wwould surprise a lot of people with how good it is.
The Massacre: Honestly, I think the reactions for this one would be exactly the same as what people think they would be.
The Smugglers: This one would blow people away. This is definitely a hidden gem. While a pretty standard historical, it is definitely not a generic episode as ot has its own unique atmosphere. There is a great abundance of fight scenes. The fourth episode especially would be good.
The Macra Terror: I honestly think this one would be a bit of a let down. The first three episodes work extremely well as reconstructions, more than any other that I've watched. It would be a lot like Marco Polo where people realize it's actually a lot less than they thought it was. Episode 4 would be the only episode that meets expectations and the only episode that would really benefit from being found. The other three would still be good, but when most people think of the Macra Terror they picture it a lot like episode 4, but the first three episodes are more about the dialogue than the action.
Fury from the Deep: I think that this one would expectations in some respects, but blow them away in others. Much like the Macra Terror, when people picture this episode they think of episodes 5 and 6, while forgetting that not much action happens in the first four episodes. However, I think that the direction, which we can see from the surviving clips was very good, would really surprise people.
The Space Pirates: While I haven't seen this episode, I know a lot about it, and I don't think it would ever be considered good even if it were found, but I think it does have the potential to become a sort of cult episode.

Since starting watching Space:1999 it's gone back to being Marco Polo for me. I'd love to see Zeinia Merton in a pre-Benes role, and Who would be the apex of that for me I think she was in an episode of The Saint too IIRC Imagine my shock when watching her topless, as Christina, in the 1971 BBC production of Casanova.
