Awesome, Anita is thrilled. If Network do a synched up version for release it will be top of her Xmas list. IIRC I read somewhere that someone was in the process of making a re-dubbed recon? Would be nice if the episode with the missing soundtrack was one that had been completed

Added: Am I right in thinking that one episode already existed in English? Yes, sort of. You can see some clips of it here www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3bdTfzh0lAI understand that it's a recon. Someone recorded the soundtrack on domestic audio tape, so they were later able to match the sound to the original pictures. The authentic English dubbed film would probably have been higher quality, and also had English titles. Here's a clip of the rediscovered episode 1 which shows the difference. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebC5j6WNzoY

Episode 3,Suspicion Falls on Andre,is apparently the one which still has no English audio.
So it seems that the BBC have none of the other twelve in English, but they surfaced in January, possibly when the DVDs (which were previously German with English subtitles) were offered for sale.Did the owner of the reel-to-reels get in touch directly with the sellers?

Oh, I didn't realise that they had already been synched up & are already on sale. Ah,but not officially! These audios would,I suppose be off-airs from the first broadcast in 1968,or the repeats in 1969 1972,1975,1977 and 1978.I can't find it on IMDB.Were voice-artist credits given in the Radio Times? Pity it's not listed on Lostshows, though other added-English-soundtrack series such as The Adventures of Floris are.Nice that a gap's been filled, but typical that one BBC audio's still missing! Added: It doesn't look as though the Radio Times gave any cast credits, either for the original actors or the dubbers? genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/search/0/20?adv=1&media=tv&order=asc&q=white+horses&yf=1968&yt=1978#search

According to one of the fan sites linked from Wikipedia, the last BBC repeat was as recent as 1978, which surprised me being the aversion to screening black & white that was creeping in at that time. The site has Radio Times clippings that might be of interest. thewhitehorsestvseries1968.wordpress.com/

I've refined the Genome results a bit: genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/search/0/20?adv=1&media=tv&order=asc&q=white+horses&yf=1968&yt=1978#search and added the 1972 repeats to my earlier post. Anyone fancy sending Genome the German cast listings? I love it that we now have the ability to fill in about 24 hours of BBC children's broadcasts (12x4x30 mins.) Added: A quick look shows a rather partial and disjointed series of repeats in 1977 and January 1978.

1978 repeats make it all the more galling that the English version was wiped. With policy as it was, you can sort of understand (although not in any way agree with of course), how things shown only once in the 60's end up being lost, but a series like this one that was repeated frequently over a 10 year period, well it beggars belief that it was junked.

Interesting stuff John, nice one. The odd thing is that Anita and I both remember seeing episode 3 "relatively" recently, and you showing it as the 2nd to last one in 78 sort of bears that out. Just out of curiosity have any individual episodes been shown as unscheduled filler daytime programs since then? It's just that I've got an idea that an odd episode might have been shown for some reason "replacing the advertised program" in the early 80's. Just a vague memory of it being on while I was repairing an old TV. (Rained off cricket perhaps?). If I had to speculate I would go for it being episode 3 because it's so fresh in the memory compared to the plot lines in the other episodes. Dunno how you would go about proving it either way though. For once, wouldn't it be nice if this proved to be the case and it turned up as an orphan episode on a dusty shelf somewhere at the Beeb completing the set.

Richard,if you had more info, the last part of this:
You can join in and become part of the community that is improving this resource. As a result of the scanning process there are lots of spelling mistakes and punctuation errors and you can edit the entries to accurately reflect the magazine entry. You can also tell us when the schedule changed and we will hold on to that information for the next stage of this project.
could apply! We've already got that anomaly of A Dog's Life supposedly being shown twice,in succeeding weeks (something the newspaper listings may clear up?),as well as three entries where no episode-title is given.
It's funny that episode 3 seemed conspicuous by its absence in the early repeats, but then turns up in the later, more recent ones-but it's still the audio that's missing!

Thanks John, if only I had the spare time at the moment I would have loved to get involved, but sadly I'm working long hours with what little spare time I have is involved in the aftermath of moving house. I have still got a pile of reel to reels that need checking and those that are of interest need transferring to digital media. . Interesting stuff though.

The language dubbing for these 'tales from Europe' serials was usually done at De Lane Lea in Soho London.I wonder if they have been approached to see if they have kept anything?

That suggests the audio was taped long ago - but apparently it's really good quality, and that makes sense again, because reel to reel tape can outdo the cassette. such as The Adventures of Clovis Floris - that is the one I keep mentioning, hoping for a similar find. I sent a message to the webmaster of www.thewhitehorses.co.uk but no reply yet.
