I'm trying to find a copy of a programme that was broadcast about my Grandfather as part of either the Calendar News or indeed another local news programme (i.e. BBC News or Nationwide) between the 24 February and the 22 April 1972. My Grandfather, Albert Neville Medforth, was attempting to cross the North Sea in a rowing boat and a news report on his crossing was produced around this time. I know that the crossing did not take place, but he had intended to depart by the end of April 1972. Most of the news interest was generated between February and April, with an article being printed in a local newspaper about it as late as 22 April. It is highly likely then that whatever report was produced, would have been in between the 24 February and the 22 April. Indeed, he received a letter from the Director of Programmes Donald Baverstock at Yorkshire Television, on the 24 February 1972, expressing news interest. Whilst attempts at searching for the film at ITV has proved unsuccessful, would there be any other organisations who would have kept such footage? Again I am uncertain whether a report was published, either by the BBC or ITV. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

The only other thing I can think of apart from ITN Source is the Yorkshire Film Archive, or the tiny possibility of the BFI.
The BBC sometimes kept filmed news reports (as opposed to bulletins).

I have recently finished digitising Albert Neville Medforth's East Yorkshire Aero Company's archives dating back to the 1950s. This includes all of the correspondence of the company, which are maps, letters and various planning documents relating to Hedon and Paull Aerodrome. Because I no longer have a use for these, the originals have all now been deposited into the Beverley Library and Archives for preservation and cataloging, and should be on public display within 6-9 months. Xarea 10-09-2015, 19:28 The entirety of The East Yorkshire Aero Company's archive has been donated to the East Riding of Yorkshire Council public archives. The collection includes much information on both Paull and Hedon airfield, where the company operated at one time. The contents of this collection can be seen here: www.eastriding.gov.uk/CalmView/Overview.aspx?s=neville+medforthThese files can be publicly accessed, providing you have a County Archive Research Network (CARN) card.

Alex - I think we may need a little more information before we can help. Do you know where your grandfather either departed or arrived on UK soil?

Hi Ken. I've attached a newspaper article about the crossing which was published on the 22 April 1972. It states that he intended to depart from the East Yorkshire coast (presumably Hornsea) and arrive in Oslo, Norway. This was intended to be a return trip. I've attached a copy of the article below. There's a few possibilities I can think of apart from ITV.
It sounds like ideal 'And Finally' material for News at Ten. Have you checked ITN to see whether they might hold footage? Your other option is the BBC - you'll basically have to ask them as there is no proper database of its holdings available.
You might also want to contact NRK, the Norwegian state broadcaster. They may have covered his arrival in Oslo. There is also a very faint possibility that they might have some earlier footage as they did exchange material on occasion with UK broadcasters in the 1970s.

NRK will sell footage to individuals but being Scandinavia it is VERY expensive. Their website used to list the fees but I can't see the rates any more. I did consider buying some footage at one point but from memory it was hundreds of pounds for one programme and this was the best part of ten years ago. Here is the link to their sales page www.nrk.no/salg/archive-and-programme-sales-1.3698586

Ken: ITN Source, ITV Viewers Requests, BBC Yorkshire and the BBC Analogue Archive have all turned up blanks. Good suggestion about NRK, and I will contact them in due course.
