A thread appeared some time ago on forgotten appearances by David Bowie and the Archive status. It might be a good time to update this as amongst other things there were missing TOTP appearances as well as LIFT OFF audios recovered?
To start there were the rare early appearances. Of those the only footage I've seen are the following surviving items:
(includes general as well as film)
1964 - TONIGHT BBC TV David Bowie is interviewed as representative for the Society for long haired men.
1966-67 (private)- colour super 8 Bowie in suit at back door of a club entrance
1967 - disturbing short film in B+W (title?)
1967 - LUV ice lolly ad in which Bowie plays a group member with arm round others in a hokey cokey type dance (music is by 'the mint' though).
1969 - LOVE YOU TILL TUESDAY film promoting music from Bowies first Deram LP and the new release Philips version of 'Space Oddity'.
1969 - SPACE ODDITY B+W studio performance (Belgium/Sweden?)
1970 - SPACE ODDITY colour IVOR NOVELLO AWARDS (Bowie in studio with acoustic)
1970 - THE LOOKING GLASS MURDERS (title?) STV special featuring Lindsay Kemp. 'Threepenny Pierrot' which features is a rewrite of the with held 1967-68 Deram single single 'London bye ta ta'. It's said the with holding of Bowies tracks was one of the tensions which led to him leaving the label.
1971 - Andy Warhol footage (short tape of mime and interview)
1972 STARMAN TOTP - video insert from 1972 show which is used on the existing '10 yrs of TOTP' special.
The Mick Rock promos for the re release of SPACE ODDITY, LIFE ON MARS etc are available on BEST OF BOWIE DVD.
The US footage for REBEL REBEL etc exist; I hear that one was used on TOTP. In addition the KNOCK ON WOOD TOTP film exists but not sure of the full programme does.
We know the following are lost:
GADZOOKS IT'S ALL HAPPENING - The King Bees? BBC TV 1965 appearance where Bowie had a Beehive hairdo to trim up his unkempt long hair.
READY STEADY GO - David Bowie and the lower third c 1966 REDIFFUSION
UNIDENTIFIED POP SHOW (Belgium TV) 1967 several tracks. Not sure what was played but apparently the following appearance was the songs as listed.
Any amendments would be appreciated. The most obvious newly reacquired material includes JEAN GENIE on TOTP 1973 of course plus an audio of the performance from LIFT OFF WITH AEYSHEA.
UNIDENTIFIED POP SHOW (Swedish or Belgium TV 1968 - Bowie performed 'Love you till Tuesday' and 'Please Mr Gravedigger'.
