But if you're going to expropriate, why not take all of them? I suppose one could always say "No,you're wrong; there were 5 cans, not 6".Bah.Did someone mention photo evidence? I take it Phil had inspected the cans to make sure they weren't empty,so it would have been awkward to say that episode three had always been missing. It may have been too much trouble and risk to get all of them. Asking someone to take ONE episode is hard enough. Hiding all six under your shirt as you walk out the door is impossible. As for inspection: I believe Phil didn't open any of the cans, preferring the RT to do that instead. For safety of the films.

Suggests that the reel could still exist Suggests it could also have burned with the station. We may never know. I think after two years, Phil and the other ME hunters have done what they could. If it still exists then it is the owner's choice to let us know what had happened. Until then: We move forward. Keeping looking, keep asking, keep enjoying the episodes we did get back. If it wasn't there two days before the fire.....

I'm going to step back here, watch some Who, and let this play out. I'm too invested. Have fun!

Fuller explanation of events on page 1685 of Planet Mondas Forum. Which should only be read in the light of the preceding 1684 pages...and of course, all the threads on the first Omnirumour board.(This is the second!).

I was referring to a specific post from "Rita" who was present at the Q and A I was only kidding,Peter.I've been perusing the Mondas site again tonight,as I have many times in the past, though less and less frequently lately. This must be the first bit of genuine Who ME news on Mondas-and here-in double yonks.Apparantly, there's a tete-a-tete chat with Phil for a few fans tomorrow. "That 'In Conversation' piece with Phil Morris is happening tomorrow at 12:00 pm with a small number of fans (around 10). Rita and her roommate are going so might be some more information to come".

If this is true,we have to hope that the hands through which this print passed, however many there were, were safe and competent hands.Of course,it could be in the garden shed of a postman who felt too depressed to deliver mail...

Its interesting that when phil talks, it gets peoples attention and the excitement raises.
Sometimes i think that its better to give the guy in nigeria 50 and take them on the spot. other times it might be thought safer through appropriate channels.
I am curious if the picture of the label will surface or if paul will confirm the story.

The can may have been left but with a different (non-Who, junk) reel substituted for Phil to collect on his return. He may well have thought, leaving Joss, that he had all six episodes safely in hand. (Being of a larcenous turn of mind, that's certainly the way I'd have tried to do it!) It is somewhat reassuring, I suggest, that someone (in Britain?) thought enough about owning an episode that they took this sort of self-centred action, in the sense that, as someone who would seem to be close to the vanguard of the search, they do know the value and rarity of the print and are, therefore, likely to take some measures to preserve it.

This is really disappointing as hell. If episode 3 was stolen, then we will probably never see it. If a collector had any intention of returning it, we would have had some better news by now.

So how many people who knew that Web of Fear had been found 12 months before everyone else? Approx November 2012 Web found - six months of negotiations with NTV Returned to BBC May 2013 Announced Oct 2013 Not that many surely? A sizeable chunk of fandom knew. It was pretty much common knowledge to some people on at least one forum I belong to, though there was an attempt to keep it from becoming too public. But yes, it was generally accepted that all six episodes had been discovered and that something had gone awry with the third (and with at least one other story). This is the first time I've heard it confirmed it was stolen, though.

Another tidbit is that the station burned down two days after Phil had returned to inquire about the missing reel. Source: Facebook ME Group discussion. Tony Chamberlain, who attended the panel. Heartbreaking. Suggests that the reel could still exist Almost certainly, I'd say.

Didn't Paul Vanezis say the other prints he examined from Nigeria were exhibiting preliminary stages of vinegar syndrome? How much time does episode 3 have before it is not recoverable? If it hasn't been destroyed already.
