Hi all,
Last night I collected a car full or quarter inch tapes, recorded by a now deceased BBC sound supervisor.
Most of his recordings were BBC tapes over recorded with LP's and CD's of pop artists, but there were some items of interest. I'll attempt to put together a complete list at some point (although there is a lot of tapes, some of which can only be identified by listening) but I'd be interested to know if his recordings of top forty countdowns, Alan Freeman shows etc... are of interest or use? These will be late seventies and early eighties. There are also off air recordings of 'The Burkiss Way', more than ten episodes and 'The Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy'.

Good stuff, would be interested to know if there are a few early to mid 70s POTPs lurking in there?

The original broadcasts of The Hitch-Hikers Guide are worth holding onto as almost all the episodes differ slightly from the later repeat transmissions and the CD releases. In particular, S02E05 (Fit the Twelfth), broadcast 10.30pm, 25 January 1980, which nearly didn't make it to air at all, as the producer, Geoffrey Perkins, recalls: In fact, having the original broadcasts complete with the original continuity announcements would be a dream for most fans of the series...

I've heard that no-one told Douglas Adams the 2nd series of HHGTTG was going to be "stripped" over a week, so he ran into his normal problems with deadlines, which caused a rush to get them recorded.

Blimey I still have my original quarter inch off-airs of the very first TX of the second series. I remember I had to hurry home from the pub to catch the last episode on the Friday night! I can't remember how much continuity I have on them though.

Ladies and Gents,
I have spent a very nice day yesterday with Mark Ayres going through some of the tapes from this collection, assembled over many years by the late Peter Poole, a sound supervisor at Pebble Mill. I worked with Peter on Midlands Today in the early 1990's and prior to that he worked in the sound transfer suite at Pebble Mill.
The highlights so far are:
Gangsters - Series Two Opening and closing signature tune. The only version of the original recording known to exist is on the actual programme tapes so this is a great find Play for Today - Red Shift. All of Pete Ryan's music cues for the play. Again, this clean music was thought lost. Curriculee Curricula stereo soundtrack. This was an Alan Plater musical play, with music by Dave Greenslade and vocals by Chris Farlowe. It was shown on BBC 2, with a stereo simulcast on Radio 4 in May 1978! The stereo soundtrack is most certainly not on the quad tape, so a lovely thing to have survived. Signature tunes - Various including Who pays the Ferryman? (various cues), Rugby Special, Two Up Two Down, Pebble Mill at One original and new (1979), Midlands Today, Radio Oxford jingles etc...
There is a selection of complete programmes recorded off-air, some of which include continuities and ends of some shows and most of the following show. Mark is making a list of these and we'll check that they survive in the archive before we dispose of any, but includes 'The Burkiss Way', various plays of the strand 'Just Before Midnight' which were only broadcast once in about 1979, lots of documentaries too numerous to mention here and many as yet unidentified. 'The Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy' recordings including off-air stereo recordings, including continuities of the first three episodes of series two and repeats of series one. The Alan Freeman doesn't seem to be complete, but I will check that material. Many of the recordings wiped over previously used sound rushes tapes from 'Red Shift', 'Top Gear', 'Gangsters', 'Boys from the Blackstuff' etc...
Regards,
Paul

This sounds like a very exciting haul of archive material. Incidentally I was one of those listeners that did record HitchHikers s02e05 complete with continuity from Moira Stuart. See my blog post

See my blog postIIRC that was one episode they only just finished in time due to Douglas Adams getting writers block when faced with writing 5 episodes to a deadline.
