I picked up some reel to reel tapes over the weekend. Have been having a listen to them, and here's what I've found on them. These are only rough notes, I've got to go back in more detail. Where it says TOTP, I'm only assuming these are from this. The only clues I have are that they all appeared on the show and the clapping at the end of the song before the tape cuts off. Tape 1 Side 1 Hendrix Purple Haze near end, Radio 1 chart show 1973 Tape 2 Side 1 Magic Rocking Horse song Hermans Hermits No milk today TOTP Gimme some lovin TOTP Hollies Stop Stop Stop TOTP Cilla Black A Fool Am I TOTP 13/10 27/10 3/11 Manfred Mann Mr James TOTP 20/10 3/11 10/11 1/12 Val Doonican What would I Be 3/11 17/11 1/12 Side 2 Small Faces, Bobby Darin TOTP 10/11/66 Lee Dorsey TOTP 24/11/66 Cliff Richard 20/10 or 10/11 Times we have had song Four Tops 10/11 or 27/12 Hold me song Yardbirds 17/11/66 Tom Jones Jigsaw girl song Goodies - Funky Gibbon Gloria Gaynor Reach Out 14 In Chart Tape 3 Side 1 Top 20 Radio 1 6th - 12th May 1973 (19 to 6) Side 2 Blank

What's the quality of the audio like? Does it sound like it was recorded with a microphone held in front of the TV (as most home recordings were), or has it been recorded with a line input?

I'm a total novice when it comes to audio (videos more my thing!) but the sounds quality is pretty good.
I would have said it was from a radio broadcast, but you can hear cheering at the end of the performance and occasionally a word or two by a presenter.
Will have to copy it to MP3 so others can have a listen

Many people are downloading MP3s thinking they are getting CD quality but they are not, they are compressed to bits.

mp3 is a compressed format, however, there are different levels of compression that mp3s can be encoded at. If you set the encoding to around 320kbps you'll be hard pressed to tell the difference between that and wav at 44.1khz (CD format).

Anything thats noisy MP3 will make the noise factor worse. much worse. The mp3 compression algorithm introduces artefacts which change the overall sound of the source audio. Therefore noise in a recording will acquire artefacts which make the noise sound different. Again, it's all about how much the original audio is compressed by; up around the 320kbps figure the artefacts are all but inaudible.

No info other than that at the minute unfortunately, Nigel. Will hopefully get the tapes digitised in the next few days and we can try and find out what's exactly on them.
