Fantastic, isn't it? I've had these a while from the same original source.

Naked Eye is one of my favourite who songs, and the one im always shouting out to Pete to play at who gigs one day they will play it when I'm front row!! The Who songs are the only one in circulation. The story ( I heard) is that someone in the Who organization in the 70's acquired a copy (before 'the Kids Are Alright' film was even in production), and this was copied (as was '5:15' (unedited), TOTP 04/10/73, 500th edition) to video tape internally at the Who Films, which was copied and leaked out to some collectors. Over the years ( again this is what I've been told), the Who's film archive got a bit neglected, and a few things have got misplaced and so forth. The Who's Pop Into 71 was then only known to be extant from the *digital rips from the leaked-VHS copies*. And that is what you see today on youtube. The Who's Pop Into 71 that appears on youtube didn't come from me, but it comes via the same original tape source, as asterisked.

Well the 73 TOTP of 5:15 appeared on the one time offically endorsed Who 'Long Live rock' torrent site so im guessing it came from someone there, esp as the youtube links were posted first to the long live rock facebook page today!

Yes it did. The Who Organization have the unedited version in colour of this performance. When actually broadcast on the BBC, some of the auto-destruction at the end and Pete V-signing the crowd was cut out. This is definitely the case, and the PVL copy of the song does not include this, and was taped OFF AIR. The Who's copy, ergo, must have come from the pre-edited tape of the 500th edition.

Superb! Two tracks they played live regularly at the time, though they do seem to be unusual choices for a tv show (I don't really want to say 'of that nature' - whoops, I did. ) These are favourite tracks by one of my most loved bands... it's great to have just sat and watched them. I'm not sure if some or all of the backing track to I Don't Even Know Myself was re-recorded (or it could be an alternate studio take) but Naked Eye sounds identical to me (disregarding the early fade, before the extended instrumental section) apart from the vocals that are live on both tracks here.

The album spot had been put into TOTP at the time, and although in some ways this was not a TOTP, that may explain the choices, as Pete Townshend was very keen to get these on the next Who album, and they had been playing these two live a little - they were also very happy to do something that wasn't part of Tommy!!!!!!!!!!!!! In regard to the tracks - the MU 'ban' on miming (actually an agreement, rather than a ban....) was that an artist or artiste had to perform live or partially live or to re-record part of the song involving at least on MU or Equity member within 24 hours of the recording of the broadcast. The Who are very interesting on this; if you look at other performances of the early 70's, 'the Seeker' from TOTP has a live vocal, and Long Live Rock from 29/01/73 tx OGWT also has a similarly sung live vocal; '5:15' from 04/10/73 TOTP has live vocals AND guitar for some of the song - Pete Townshend can be seen switching it off and on during the song. Won't Get Fooled Again from TOTP 1971 is a total mime - this being the incident where the got the MU rep pished and he thought they were re-recording it but they weren't!!!! The Twickenham filmed "promo" of Join Together is also a straight mime - Jew's Harp's harmonicas and all - but the fact they were trying to convince the BBC and unions that they were playing live (even though they weren't) either fooled them or the fact that the Who had spent a fortune on filming the clip and employing unionized camera operators, technicians and others.

Thanks for the info, Ray! Yes - at the 1970 IOW festival, Roger says that I Don't Even Know Myself was 'on/from our new album' (or something very like that) and I think it's a shame that it didn't make it on... but Who fans usually know about the long, convoluted history of Lifehouse and it's fortunate to have that and Naked Eye (plus others) added to one of the CD versions of Who's Next - which I have. I'd be interested to know how many times they DID play Tommy in its entirety when it was 'current' (the figures should be out there somewhere and I'm sure I'll come across this, one day.) I've read about the MU thing, some time ago (I think it was in a book, not on the 'net) but couldn't remember all of the details. I've seen all the clips you mention and recall Won't Get Fooled Again (firstly, in the Sounds Of The Seventies series) and Join Together on the Who's Better Who's Best DVD (I'm almost certain it was on that?) as being straight mimes, but didn't really think anything of that. And I wasn't quite sure what Join Together was made for.

To the ""untrained"" eye (naked?!?!?!), it may look as though they're playing live in that film, quite obviously, they're not.

Yes, it was just that I thought it was something unusual for them to do at the time. For someone who wasn't familiar with the recording (or perhaps too observant) they may think it was indeed 'live'.

Pete Townshend had a trusted employee in his eel pie archive gathering footage. The source of several things is the trusted one running off several copies of tapes for himself. Since caught.

These clips (in particular "Naked Eye") highlight just what a terrible mimer Keith Moon was, and he's the same on just about every mimed Who clip - was it just that he couldn't be arsed to make it look convincing?
