Here's some more information John, again from the NME... I think they were a wee bit harsh disqualifying the Paul Jones' composition because it had been on TYLS previously

Yes, I'd never heard of it before either Alan! meantime here's some more articles about it again from the NME... It's a pity this edition does'nt exist as it would have been interesting to see and hear the audience reaction for good or bad also what a shambles this show appears to have been!!!

I know I could look it up,though it might take a while, but did Manfred Mann really record a song called 'God is on My Side' as well as Dylan's 'With God on Our Side'? It sounds like the sort of thing Rod Stewart would do!

No that was a misprint - the EP 'The One in The Middle' (1964) had these four tracks; 'The One in The Middle / Watermelon Man / What Am I To Do ? / With God on our Side
this EP made the singles charts (as a number of EPs did), Paul Jones apparently originally wrote the title track for The Yardbirds (per the EP sleeve notes)
The cool jazzy 'Watermelon Man' featured notable sax playing by Mike Vickers while 'What Am I To Do ?' was a Phil Spector / Doc Pomus song they had considered as a possible single
Their piano led version of Bob Dylan's song (starting a long tradition of Manfred successfully covering Dylan) got the 'thumbs up' from Dylan himself, and was a controversial song at the time even referencing the Holocaust ('....tho' they murdered six million, in their ovens they fried...the Germans now too have God on their side...')
The 1964 EP was in mono only but true stereo versions of all four tracks have since surfaced on various LPs and CDs.

Thanks,Patrick. At the risk of going O/T,the tune for 'With God' came from Dominic Behan's 'The Patriot Game' www.youtube.com/watch?v=iy2xz1Zuzbs I hadn't realised that there was a line about "six counties" as Dylan had one-as you say-about "six million".By "two banned tracks" I take it there was a problem getting airplay for 'With God'? Or was the record company unhappy? William,do you think you could send the info about the line-up at the final to Kal?
