Hi, I've been having great fun watching Season Five in order (first time since I saw its original run) and have reached "The Wheel in Space". I've successfully found Loose Cannon's recons for Abominable Snowmen and Fury from the Deep on the Internet, and very good they are too. But it seems a lot of the part episodes for Wheel in Space have been blocked for "copy-right reasons" by the BBC. Has this happened recently and does anyone know why? And more importantly, is there any way of getting hold of the blocked bits?

It happens all the time, Simon. YouTube uses a ContentID bot which can automatically detect particular copyright offending material in videos submitted to the site. If it does, the videos are blocked. Sometimes it detects things straight away, sometimes it can take a while and it also depends on what parameters the copyright holder has asked the site to search for, so that things that were okay one day can be blocked the next.

The BBC have also blocked the first part of loose cannon's The Power of the Daleks episode one. You could try dailymotion, I think they have all the recons available in full.

Dailymotion certainly has some. Not sure if they're LC, though.
It was easily available on the popular file sharing site that was taken down a few days ago. Probably still on others like it.

Thanks everyone. Co-incidentally I met someone in the pub last night who knows a Dalek and spent last weekend at the house used for the location of Seeds of Doom; (interesting place Ludlow) and he reckons it's an algorithm that detects the beginning credits. Which could explain why you get the second and third parts of Ep. 1 (which, I agree, is fantastic!), and not the first part. I shall continue to search. Perhaps somewhere on a dusty virtual shelf...

There's various things that I've tried to upload that are just clips with no titles and just dialogue and they get detected as well!

I did have a look on dailymotion for The Power of the Daleks, but most of the videos I found were fan made or very poor quality. Still, the search goes on!

There is a quite a variety of quality of stuff out there! I've managed to get as far as Episode 2 in a variety of guises with Ep. 3 to come on my Lost in Time DVD, hurrah.
I'd be interested to know more about Loose Cannon. Who are they? Have the BBC thought to collaborate with them to put out lost episode stuff? (I much prefer their gentle mix of photo snaps and the odd bit of animation to most of the fully animated episodes available).
Cheers Simon

They are a non profit organisation ran by fans who make recons in their spare time. They started out in the late 90s doing them all on VHS. Before they were all available on the internet you had to send off for them, you would usually send them an email of what you would like and they would put you in contact with one of their members. You would then send them blank VHS tapes or DVDs in the post, they would then copy them for you and send them back. Apart from the postage it was all free. I don't even know if they do that anymore, their website has been down for months now. It used to be www.recons.comIt has been brought up many times about a collaboration with the BBC but the BBC never seemed that interested. They did however do the reconstruction for Galaxy 4 included in the Aztecs special edition DVD. They used to operate below the radar and keep a low profile. The BBC knew about them and they were ok with what they did as long as they remained non profit. However, since it's all leaked out on you tube and the like they have been encountering problems. The last recon they did was The Wheel in Space but it leaked on you tube before it was released on their website and I think they got in trouble for it and since then the whole operation has gone quiet.

Many thanks James. An interesting story. Perhaps now the DVDs have reached even The Underwater Menace there could be more interest in Recons being released between the two parties? I'm off to watch the last Peter Davison season in order once I've finished the many different facets of The Wheel In Space. When I get around to Season 6, who knows even The Space Pirates may be in a better viewing condition (there's a mysterious serial for you...)?
Cheers Simon
