Hello Marie The bfi holds some episodes of Gardeners' World with Percy Thrower from 1972 onwards. Percy Thrower began on BBC TV in 1955 with In The Garden, which the BBC may hold on telerecordings. He continued in 1956 with Gardening Club which ran right through to 1967. In 1969 he continued with Gardeners' World which was first shown on BBC 2 through to 1976, possibly beyond 1976? Some of the 1973 episodes/editions were repeated on BBC 1 a few days later. You may enjoy the following, which is entitled Percy Thrower MBE - Britain's 1st Television Gardening Star. It's 6.19 minutes long. www.youtube.com/watch?v=liK_9FXsxscIt would be interesting Marie, if you or someone could contact the BBC and ask them if they hold any In The Garden, Gardening Club or Gardeners' World.

Lost Shows lists all Gardener's World as existing complete from 1981 onwards (although this would not include the Percy Thrower era editions, which ended around 1976, when he fell foul of the BBC's advertising restrictions). I expect the earlier holdings for the series will be added in due course, although I would take it as reasonably correct that not many Thrower editions survive. In Friday's documentary, I noted several though: an early Gardening Club on t/r (probably '50s), a Gardener's World from the '60s and at least two or three in colour from the late '60s / early '70s (one on colour VT and two on colour film - one of these mute). At a guess I'd say there won't be many (any?) more, sadly.
Very pleased to see the BBC digging deeper in the archives for this programme too, with clips from rarely seen series from the '60s - some on VT as well - in the factual / instructional / educational genres (including more Fanny Cradock - see posting under her thread). No idea if these shows (some of which I'd never heard of) survive complete but they combine to form a fascinating modern social history. If only the BBC would make these things more available to the public!

If only the BBC would make these things more available to the public! This is an ideal opportunity for the iPlayer. The online (i.e non-Virgin Media) version already has a selection of good archive documentaries. The perfect way to accompany a show like this would be to make some of the programmes used in the production available to view in full on the iPlayer after the main documentary has aired. I assume the BBC have started with factual shows, as there are generally less clearance problems and costs. More Man Alive! That's what I say. If you haven't seen some of the archive documentaries yet, there are some very good programmes about London, Architecture and the Army at the moment. I really enjoyed A City Crowned with a Green and One Pair of Eyes to name but a few of them. It's always worth checking the A-Z list in documentaries.

Late Night Line-Up too! All these sorts of things are missed out of DVD releases, by and large, but as much a time capsule of their era as anything.

Thanks for the very informative reply Simon, Laurence and Tim. It is a pity the Percy Thrower is so unrepresented as he was the guy that made gardening what it is today. Again it is good of the BBC to show these rare clips and to even show material without sound. How do the two get disjointed? I would be good to have the source material on the iplayer as extra links.

It looks very much like one of his BBC shows, although I'm unclear if it's one that's in their archive (rather than just Huntley).

Again it is good of the BBC to show these rare clips and to even show material without sound. How do the two get disjointed? If a programme was shot on 16mm film, the soundtrack would be recorded separately and then edited alongside the picture on a separate magnetic film (like a magnetic tape, but 16mm wide and with sprocket holes). This could either then be combined with the picture as a final print, or if the material was intended to be used once only, the edited picture and sound would be kept separate and transmitted from two machines running in synchronisation. Usually these reels were kept together in the same film can afterwards, but they can get split up... (More on the 16mm workflow here : missingepisodes.proboards.com/post/125767/thread )

Very little programmes covering DIY or gardening or self-help exist from either channel. Well done Simon, good and pointed reminder, I'd forgotten about!

Talking of DIY programmes, does anyone know what exists of Toolbox with Mike Smith from the early '70s or Barry Bucknell's series from the '60s?

Talking of DIY programmes, does anyone know what exists of Toolbox with Mike Smith from the early '70s or Barry Bucknell's series from the '60s? Laurence I have just contacted Kaleidoscope asking them to confirm the holdings for 6 episodes of Toolbox listed with holdings at the bfi...awaiting confirmation. The bfi also has a filmographic record for another episode of Toolbox, made by Yorkshire Television btw, which has the episode title of Odds and Ends and a Golf Caddy 20/12/70, no film or video collections held at the bfi, for this episode, so if anyone can locate? Barry Bucknell's Do It Yourself BBC late 1950's. Also Bucknell's House 1962 BBC a series where he renovated a house. Here are 2 items, first is 0.33 seconds long. www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5W9RaJBzYwsecond contains 2 clips, 1.41 minutes long www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RVnzu0COFUBarry was also in a Publiic Information Film called Energy Sense Is Common Sense 1976. Here it is at 0.31 seconds long. www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8Cs4tKsad8I do not know if any of these 3 Barry Bucknell items are Missing, can anyone tell us or find out please.

Excellente! John, you've done it again! The bfi hold all 25 that you have located above, on VHS and Digital Betacam. The series was called Jobs Around The House made by Yorkshire Television. there was a 26th episode dated 16/5/73 called Woodcarving Just A Block Of Wood, the bfi has no film or video for this episode. No idea if this Series is Missing, but if it is, John, you've located 25 of them. Can you locate the 26th please

I'm too young to remember Barry Bucknall but remember well the Kenny Everett character based upon him. Here he is from a clip. www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RVnzu0COFU
