Also, I'm not converting U-matic or Philips (well, not the 1500/1700 series anyway). Just VHS. I did actually ask to see more expensive items saying quality was more important than cheapness, but they only had all these domestic grade items. There isn't really a middle ground - the next step up are multi-hundred pound capture cards for which I can't justify the cost. I already have a PCI capture card by the way, but its encoding of analogue sources is way below that of the Climax. It only excels on digital channels. EDIT: Not many people will be able to download these at once due to Dropbox's bandwidth restrictions, but here are two clips - from the same piece of tape, as full size MPEG2 files. For anyone who wants to see a quality comparison which of course YouTube wouldn't be able to make clear. www.dropbox.com/s/727rw536guacgy4/VHStoDVD%20Sample%20-%20Climax.mpg?dl=0www.dropbox.com/s/z5rjekcm4uorexe/VHStoDVD%20Sample%20-%20Honestech.mpg?dl=0

Get yourself a secondhand Canopus ADVC100 or something similar with a TBC if your serious about getting a quality transfer. If not it's only going to be crappy USB devices that are available to you, as there isn't really much available under 100 quid

I'm hoping to bag a refurbed one of those as we speak. In the meantime, here's a clip I've uploaded to YT captured with the Climax. The playback VCR is a Sony SLV-E700. The recording however was made on a Mitsubishi B-31 with linear mono sound.

Plenty of Betacam SP decks going unwanted at the BBC TVC auction! Right now, a tenner would snaffle you one!

Still a few hours to go, and registration is instantaneous.
