For ages I've been planning on going into my local second hand/antique shop to ask if they ever get old film prints. Today I finally did and the response was pretty positive. Apparently they do stumble across these things and that they currently had one print that wasn't on display due to recent news... The print in question was an episode of The Tonight Show labelled as having been broadcast on '5/27/63' and to have featured 'Rolf Harris'. Wikipedia suggests that there was such an episode (no. 169) but apart from general statements suggesting little exists from this era of the show I can't ascertain whether there are known copies of this exact program. Lost Shows doesn't seem to list it so I thought I'd ask on here if anyone knew which episodes exist and which don't. I tried to check if the print did match the can but I began to get worried I would get the whole thing in a tangle and put it back before I could see any 'titles'. However a small bit of tape as well as the words written on the leader indicate that it is this material. Any help would be greatly received. I can post some pictures of the can/print in question if that would be helpful. All the best, Simeon

It won't be mentioned on Lost Shows as it's not a British programme. As far as archive status is concerned though, I'm afraid I can't help. Anyone?

Try the following www.tvobscurities.com/lost/lostormissingin the Search Television Obscurities box, type in Tonight, up comes, half way down the page Johnny Carson website now features a searchable database of the existing 3,300 hours of The Tonight show with Johnny Carson. There's a catch: at the moment the database is only available to those hoping to license clips for commercial purposes. Simeon I do not know how old that "catch" is, it might be different now. www.johnnycarson.comhas a 'contact us' form where you can ask questions about the show and they say they will respond shortly. good luck, let us know how you get on please

Thank you John and Simon. I've tried to sign up for an account on the Johnny Carson site without having to give any Company details. The page said they'd come back to me in 48 hours so we'll see if that if works. Will check their 'Contact Us' page also and drop them an email.

The tonight show was a daily talk show.
while the 70s and 80s are in the archive, most of the 60s were not saved. There is only a very small amount in existance from this era.
While I do not know if this is a missing one or not, the odds are that it's missing and and a very newsorthy find.. especially if its an original print.
Missing early tonight shows are a very important find. Contacting carson enterprises could confirm/deny its existance, however if the price is affordable i would grab it up and not leave it on the shelf.
At best you have recovered a missing episode at worst you put it up on ebay or maybe steven siegel could help you find a buyer for it.
Good luck!

Yep, the print is mine. Luckily, the gentleman who owns the shop wasn't in any great hurry to sell the print and so was able to pop home to do a little research into it before I parted with my money!
George, that was my exact feeling. Might as well pick it up whilst I can as even if it's not the only copy I'm sure someone would want it! I managed to haggle a little for it (I realised I've literally never haggled in a shop for something in my life!) as it's a black and white print and as far as I can tell all the episodes were originally made in colour, so not an original.

Psstttttt...try giving this e-mail a try; dgaysunas@carsonentertainmentgroup.com
They'll be up and about in California by now, to boot. And welcome the return of any long-lost materials. I happen to know that they're particularly thin on the ground for early-'60s stuff.

Good jub bro. While the focus is on UK material, there are still some great things from usa that can be important finds. Unlike the BBC, perhaps the Carson's group will pay you good money for it if it's a missing episode. When carson was alive, I believe he would have lets hope its a major find Its really nice to see when major recoverys come out of this group.

Thank you Patrick, I have sent off an email. Hopefully this will enable details of the episode's availability to come to light.

it's a black and white print and as far as I can tell all the episodes were originally made in colour, so not an original. To keep in in prospective. Most of the 1960s original prints made were b/w. Any color that exists could either be from a master videotape or a color print made for a special purpose.

Was The Tonight Show still live at this point?
Jack Paar had a few run-ins with NBC over jokes, so by then it might have been pre-recorded by then.
I know up to about 1972 a lot of editions were wiped, though quite a few clips have survived by being put into compilations that were kept.

Well I was granted access to the licensing archive which details how 'for the first time in history, every episode and segment from the thirty years of Johnny Carson's unprecedented Late Night run is available for license to the entertainment and broadcast industry.'
When I search for episodes/segments broadcast on the 27th May 1963, however, no results show. Interesting...

Above you mentioned that, this episode was 169, which tally's with a listing on an internet website, which also gives the full cast for that particular episode as Guests: Keely Smith, George Jessel, Artie Shaw, Elaine Shepherd....Musical/Entertainment Guests: Rolf Harris. Perhaps you could run these names past 'the licensing archive above' and if nothing shows for 27 May 1963, it may go some way to pinpointing a Missing Episode...keep us posted Simeon
