News has come in that appears that the Channel 4 Archive did not receive all episodes of The Big Breakfast from Planet 24/Carlton. The BFI Archive hold some and a list is being compiled. ITV archives have been checked and they have no holdings at all. In typical archive fashion one would have to search every single tx date separately, the system can't generate a list of what does survive.
However at the moment the interest is if anyone here may have off-air recordings of 28th August 1998 and 3rd September 1998 for an ITV project?? Should any other episodes be confirmed as missing, information will be given here.
Please do email at chris@lostshows.com if you have any Big Breakfast recordings.

I didn't know that C4 had an archive until now!. I thought the programmes they broadcast were held by the independent producers.

I still find it sad to believe most shows were just live-to-air and not even recorded.

I still find it sad to believe most shows were just live-to-air and not even recorded. That's not definite at this stage. But at the moment there is some sort of a discrepency as to what exists and is to hand. Fingers crossed that things will turn up. What is definite is that not everything is missing.

In thought being live they would be recorded in case someone acted up & it was needed as evidence.

Did C4 keep a "duty log" of everything as broadcast on VHS, like the BBC did from 1987?

AIUI any such tapes are reused on a cycle of 30, 60 or 90 days depending on the organisation.

At the moment, a vast amount of shows are listed as 'existence unknown' on lostshows.com. This does not necessarily mean that they all are lost. This is just what the search engine says while entries are being updated (it takes ages to do this and I do not envy the compilers!!!!) In the meanwhile, while its' fate is unknown, there is one dated full episode of the Big Breakfast on youtube (lots of clips, but only one full episode). This one:- www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0smkR0N8Jg 22/12/2000 (episode 2152) Just to reiterate, we still are unsure how many are definitely lost at the moment, but 695 do exist. News when I get it!
