I've just seen a reference in an obituary to Sheila Tracy www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-29443732to a series based around hospital visits by celebrities that ran in the sixties - and I recalled the thread somewhere on here about such a show featuring a clip from evil of the daleks - but I don't think it was ever identified - wasn't it thought to be something involving Rolf Harris? Have any of the DW paperwork researchers checked for production files for "A Spoonful Of Sugar"?

yep - that's the thread - I see you spotted the "spoonful of sugar" reference before - It's not a series i'd ever heard of and the xmas listings site shows it was on xmas day in 67-69, if it was screened at any other time of year I guess it could be the source of that recollection about an evil clip since Rolf could have been a featured celebrity rather than the host.

I spent some time checking into this when I was at the Written Archives six years ago, but came up completely blank. There's no record of any clips being used on such a programme and no indication in any of the actor contributor files of any payment being made for the use of any such sequences.

Would payments be waived,in the circumstances? Though I guess there'd still be a record...Of course,Xmas can be an awkward time for getting anything recorded... Were there one or two cases of the hospitals being given copies of the programmes,or is that wrong?

Were there one or two cases of the hospitals being given copies of the programmes,or is that wrong? Payments would certainly have be made and recorded in the actor's files. The programmes weren't charity events, so normal procedures would have still applied. I can't say that I've ever heard of hospitals being given copies of such programmes. I can't really see what use they'd have for them.

I can see organisations being keen on having material in their archives.

The hospital visit series ran for many years in the early sixties and was called Meet the Kids. It had a variety of hosts and initially was transmitted at Christmas. Later it was shown on Bank Holidays. I seem to be the only person who can recall the particular episode in question on this thread. I have previously raised a thread about ii to a resounding silence. No matter. I'm not certain when it was actually broadcast but I recall the presenter turning to the audience and saying something like "well, if you enjoyed that brief clip the whole story will be repeated here on BBC1 in few weeks time. This would place it Whit Monday holiday 1968 during transmission of the Space Wheel and just before the Evil repeat. Time of day? Late afternoon? Early evening? Not sure. The presenter was Rolf Harris. He had spoken to a number of other patients before he said to young lad in his something like - "Hi. You're ........ and what's wrong with you? (Answer given) Hey. I gather you're a big fan of Doctor Who? (A bit more waffle before......) The entire sequence of the final Dalek battle on Skaro from Evil of the Daleks was repeated. Brilliant! But does no one else recall it? Is the young lad who was interviewed and selected the sequence still alive? Does he remember? Perhaps we should ask Rolf ....................sorry. out of order there but if someone had picked up on my original thread, we might have been able to bet an answer.

As mentioned abvoe John, I've checked at Caversham follwing your previous thread, and I can't find any record of any such programme at that time or any indication of that clips from Evil were shown after the initial broadcast.

How strange. How very, very strange. Sorry I missed your posting about Caversham. Sometimes I only rapidly scan these threads. My memory of Rolf, a lad in a hospital bed, a few weeks before the Evil repeat, and the clip of the battle being shown are very clear. I have only worked out it was Meet the Kids but even that I'm pretty certain about. Does anyone have access to the Radio Times from that era?

Not sure if this is relevant, but I recall seeing a clip of the final battle from "Evil of The Daleks" on "Points of View" (or possibly some other programme with a very similar format to "Points of View".) I think a viewer had written asking to see again the moment when the "Daleks were destroyed." The clip may well have just been of Daleks blowing up etc, with no other actors involved.

You might be thinking of Ask Aspel. I've heard that a clip from EOTD was used, but that edition of AA is itself missing.

As per other thread, "Ask Aspel" had a clip from "Power Of The Daleks" in the early 70s, which I also saw, but the clip I recall from EOTD was several years earlier than that - ie in the 60s and not from AA.

As mentioned abvoe John, I've checked at Caversham follwing your previous thread, and I can't find any record of any such programme at that time or any indication of that clips from Evil were shown after the initial broadcast. just curious .were clearances sought , or actors paid for show "previews" or trailers in other BBC shows ? ( which appears to be what might have been seen in this instance? ) i remember watching an old "all gas and Gaiters " where one of the priests is sick in bed , but ends with him quite happilly watching the start of Doctor Who (my memory is we were shown his reaction with the back of the Tv in front of the camera , with just the theme playing ) but would there be a clearance record for things like that?
