Hello, In the early 1970s, I can remember a BBC schools programme with Athletics Coach and Commentator Ron Pickering in which he was giving advice to School Children by getting them interested in Athletics and he had a guest on each show demonstrating the different techniques to each event, the programme was filmed at the National Sports Centre at Crystal Palace, however the name of the programme escapes me. I have tried the Lostshows site with NO joy. Thank you.

Hi Kelvin
the BBC schools programme you are trying to identify may possibly be this..
1973 Cast: Ron Pickering
Athlete
BBC TV
a series of 12 films designed as a practical adjunct to the training of young athletes. Sprints, Hurdles, Middle Distance, High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Pole Vault, Shot, Discus, Javelin, Hammer, and Indoor Training.
If anyone who works at the BBC is reading this, perhaps they can tell you if any of these 12 films exist, or perhaps Kaleidoscope or Ray can find out for you. Not entirely sure this was a schools programme, perhaps you can tell us if this is the programme you are trying to identify?

The 'expert' on the long jump programme was Alan Lerwill, as I recall watching. He didn't seem all that good!

Kelvin
the BBC has kindly provided some more information about Athlete. They say it was originally shown in 1972, it was a further education programme, not a school series. The BBC retains 4 of the episodes and another one is only held in the National Film Archive.
So of the 12 original episodes, only 5 are known where to exist. Unless others know different?
