Underwater Menace episodes 2 & 3 on The Moonbase DVD? Sounds great! Now I wonder why The BBC didn't think of it? What I would have loved is if they did a sort of Patrick Troughton early years sort of release, where they had UM and Moonbase on it with complete animated reconstructions. And maybe as a bonus include the Faceless Ones and Evil of the Daleks episodes on there as well

Hmm! I started this thread and am disappointed (but not surprised to find it has been hi-jacked and lost its way. My original disappointments were: 1) no announcements on episode finds 2) no release date for Underwater Menace - Coinciding with a new Doctor in a new series
My own answers are: 1) my expectations for New finds were, of course, my eternal optimism that anything has already been found. Unreasonable I know. But 2) the status of UM remains bewildering. Why leave the successful release of all archive material, wonderful restored up in the air, like a thread dangling tantalisingly just beyond reach? We know it is there but are not allowed to have it - why? P.s. I have Love thy Neighbour on DVD. It is fascinating in that it is not all "bad" Some of it is very funny (when the hhumour is not race based) However when race is the subject it veers from the mildly embarrassing to disturbingly cringe making. To fully understand our changes in cultural standards this type of series does need to be preserved and watched (explaining the context) once in a while. There. I've hijacked my own thread and deviated from the subject!

Not entirely hi-jacked John as we have spoken about, and reasoned why UM is not yet out :0) But picking up on your own hi-jacking................I remember watching Love Thy Neighbour when it was first on. I was only a kid and remember laughing at it. Not seen it since, so would be interested how the humour works now. I know they did show selected episodes on Granada+ or some such station some years ago. But my one overriding memory is that, and I think this is where the PC brigade miss the point sometimes, the white man was always the one to be shown up as the bigoted idiot. Did that not make the show more integration friendly? Don't get me wrong, again context is all and I'm sure there is a lot of, what would be deemed offensive scriptwriting today and I agree it should get an airing now and again rather than be kept a guilty secret in the back of a cupboard.
Now concerning the blacked up/Red Indian chat up further in this thread. For TV, I can only assume that there were few actors of ethnic origins in Equity at the time and there was probably a bit of a old boys network in place, and let's face it, probably some racism involved at times.
Making more assumptions, I can only think that TV and film are different concerning race because the TV companies have more control over their shows? I guess where films are concerned, TV buys a package. So for every Toy Story, you have to buy 10 other kids films of varying quality, old westerns, some rom-coms and a crate of films that can only be shown at 2am or Christmas as they are so rubbish. Also, I guess the big studios wanted a 'Name' in roles to draw the punters in. Similar to the UK putting an American in a lead so we could sell it to the US.
Lastly, before you all die of my prattling on. DVD. When a show is free to air, to avoid complaints or offence, the company can control what you see. DVD is a conscious choice to make. So if I buy Love Thy Neighbour and is offended, that's my fault.

I suppose whilst it is commercially viable to animate two episodes of The Moonbase as it has Cybermen in it, less people apart from die hard fans would be interested in buying The Crusade "a boring historical with no monster in it" (not in my opinion of course) and a poorly regarded story like The Underwater Menace. It would have made more sense to put the two episodes of The Underwater Menace on The Moonbase DVD.
Actually they have offered an explanation for avoiding The Crusade, it is because the two episodes with a telesnap reconstruction is already available on the Lost in Time box set, so to get its own release it would need something significant to encourage the BBC to release it, this would either be one or both of the two missing episodes being recovered or animation (as has been the case for the other stories). However, there are "concerns" that if they animated a white actor using "black face" the PC-brigade will descend on them. Not the best of things to happen at the conclusion of your range. So until something comes back, we are stuck.
The Underwater Menace though is a mystery, so much so that even the people behind the DVD release haven't got a clue why it isn't coming out yet.
The Lost in Time boxset has the audio of Crusade 2 and 4 but no telesnap reconstruction.

I've hijacked my own thread and deviated from the subject! 1. Clara in a recent episode was wearing a blouse with 500 eyes on it! (apparently). They look like black dots to me. 2. The Underwater Menace - as this is not a highly regarded story it probably isn't economical to animate the two other episodes as not enough people would buy the dvd to make it cost effective. And would enough people buy it for two episodes and two telesnap recons only? They should have put it on The Moonbase dvd.

I hope we find out soon what they are going to do with UNDERWATER MENACE. We still don't know why the animation was shelved. Maybe BBC did not like what they saw.

I think sadly they should have gotten it out a long time ago.
When um2 was found, there was a lot of media excitement. If they offered a package with two new animations and a newly found episode within a year of recovery. I think it would have done amazing,
While I believe if still released it would do great, I think it has become old news and if they go cheap with a telesnap recon, it will not help.

I would have been perfectly happy with recons of episodes 1 and 4. I still don't get the BBC's thinking on this unless they know something about the other episodes that we don't.

If I were you I'd record UM 2 from Daily Motion just in case it never materialises!

The trouble is that while hard core fans would buy UM with recons, the general public would not. A 1960's, B&W, incomplete story at £12.99?
I'm guessing as each release has a budget, they would have to sell in large numbers just to break even. Look at the 50th Anniversary box set. Only 6,000 in blu-ray and if the huge demand was there, it should be sold out by now.............. and that's for new stuff.

True but the BBC must know that they're bound to be left with some unsold discs and they must be making a vast profit to even think of releasing stories anyways! Perhaps the recent releases haven't brought in the mazumas and they are panicking about UM or maybe, just maybe UM is one of the stories to have been returned and could be being prepared while we speak and think!

Have earlier visited the Missing Episodes section on the GB forum, where I read all and never comment, some guy had recieved a reply from Worldwide, basically saying that UM was 'still being worked on'. Promising, but make of it what you will.
