Had a look to make sure that there isn't a duplicate thread.
In episode 10 of the War Games where the Doctor is presenting his defence at his trial he shows the Timelords some of the monsters he fought.
Were the brief clips of the monsters taken from other episodes or were they filmed for the War Games?
I know that there is that famous publicity photo of Troughton and his monsters but the thought did cross my mind.
Thanks.

The clips were filmed for the episode It's a shame they weren't film inserts (I think that's the correct term, please correct me if I'm wrong), because if they were we would likely have a small piece of Evil or Power of the Daleks that we don't, even if it is being projected across a screen. Heck, there was even the possibility of brief sections of Web of Fear 3, The Invasion 4, and Ice Warriors 2 or 3; very unlikely it would have happened though

It would have worked rather nicely in the context of the series to have had an indulgent retrospective of the Doctor's encounters with his major foes over the years. Ten years later that type of thing would have been a shoe-in.

Remember looking at the Radio Times cast list for the episode (we did that then too) and getting excited about seeing Daleks and Cybermen again. My parents explained that all his enemies were going to "exterminate him" as Troughtons departure had been well publicised. I remember sitting through the episode and being dissapointed at the brief appearance of them. Now of course it is a favourite of mine and still brings a tear to my eye as it was the end of an era.

Ten years later that type of thing would have been a shoe-in. IIRC if Shada had been completed we would have some monster cameos. I've not seen any reconstructions of the scrift so a bit clueless about it.

As Rowan said earlier they were filmed for the story. The clip of a cyberman waving its arms about shows an Invasion cyberman but it is waving its arms about a bit like the Wheel in Space cybermen and (i think) is accompanied by Wheel in Space music. Really a missed opportunity to give us what could have been a classic retrospective of Troughton's era. At least The War Games is intact and watchable (could you imagine what the production team could have done with War Games with the new series's budget and special effects!?!).

That publicity photo of Troughton and all the monsters did make me wonder if that was the case. But the apperence of the Yeti and did make me think that they were taken from the Web of Fear. (although if that were the case it would have been redundant due to Webs re appearence.) Looks like I was chasing phantoms.

It would be great if someone could post that image of Troughton and the monsters. That was quite a classic image.

If you really want to see it it'll take you about 30 seconds on Google Images.

I re-watched The War Games a couple of days ago, and got though all 10 episodes in one sitting, and wow, after watching it three times, I can now see why it got voted the best story of the 60s era in Doctor Who Magazine 474!
WARING: if you are planing to watch the whole thing in one sitting, it's over 4 hours long!!!

At one time The War Games didn't used to be that well rated, often considered to be overpadded to make up for other stories being cancelled.
Introducing the Time Lords & the Doctor's trial helps to swing things the other way.

Introducing the Time Lords & the Doctor's trial helps to swing things the other way. I don't believe many people believed that. This was essentially the Virgin(in more ways than one) Era, where The War Games was "boring" and "padded", and Paul Cornell infamously gave every Pertwee story a "0", while proclaiming The Happiness Patrol and Battlefield to be All Time Classics. But only a very small group of people ever thought that way. I'm really glad that The War Games survives in its entirety, as its one of my all time favourite Who stories.

You might be right, at that time the videos weren't always easy to find & not everyone had access to UK Gold.
Also there only a few guide books around, so it was the opinions of a select few reviewers that carried a lot of weight.

What would of capped that story off would of been the ending fading into colour
