Actually, AIUI, it was Babelcolour's misunderstanding. There is a substantial automatic element to the interpolation, in that motion vectors are calculated from the luminance content and used to move the chroma to follow the luma. That's not to say it's foolproof - far from it - which is why Pete has plently of manual tweaking to do, but without the automatic motion tracking it would be all but impossible.

Not strictly true: three-quarters of the colour space was missing from the raw IotD Episode 1 before some of the blue was manually replaced. Technically, the Colour Recovery process was run in its 'single quadrant' mode, where all the chrominance was rendered in the -U +V quadrant (containing mainly reds, yellows and oranges). Therefore any colours which should have been in the other three quadrants were rendered incorrectly:
+U-V mostly blue +U+V mostly purple -U-V mostly green Richard.

Hi Richard,
Thanks for the clarification, though I should be clear that my response wasn't based on anything Babelcolour had said - more on Pete's own response to someone on GB assuming the interpolation was automated...

Are you sure you've got that right? It was Babelcolour, not Peter, who reacted on GB to the suggestion it was automated. This is what he said: "as far as I'm aware we do not have any automated motion-estimation program. The key frames are, on average, 5 frames apart and Peter has the unenviable and labour-intensive job of manually tracking and warping the chroma over the intervening frames".
In response to that comment I contacted Peter directly and he confirmed to me that the process does use automated motion estimation and that it works well much of the time. Only in the presence of complex motion, for example when objects cross in different directions, does it require a lot of manual intervention.
It's still a huge amount of work of course.
Richard.

Oh sorry - mea culpa! I misremembered it as Pete sticking up for himself rather than Babelcolour sticking up for Pete...

I thought they still had a lot of work to do on this story. I'd be surprised if they were able to get it done that quickly.

Since there are relatively few stories yet to be released i would have thought Ambassadors of death would have been 2 entertains priority.

BTW why hasn't there been a release date for The Krotons for Region 2 or 4 and it seems that Region 1 is getting it first for some odd reason? As an American I prefer Region 2 releases, Region 1 can be Spartan sometimes.

'The Krotons' is due in the UK on July 10th, according to Roobarbs.
'Ambassadors' is expected next year, although as no date has been announced this is of course subject to change.

We're nearly half way through 2012...
It will be a mix of domestic tape colour and CR - we've known this for a long time. Whether patches will need touching up I don't know. Babelcolour has another project aside from MOE 1. It might be for parts of Ambassadors, might not. We can speculate the hell out of it, but the fact is that we will not know until something official is said.
