Nice to hear but once again no sign of any complete shows from the archives being repeated.

Why oh why won't the BBC repeat any complete shows from their archives??????

Probably because any complete edition is likely to contain a large proportion of very obscure and even rather poor acts who were only on the show because their record was new or rising up the chart (if only in the lower reaches) and more importantly they were willing and able to appear. Doing compilation shows means you can concentrate on the more popular acts and make a better show for the general viewer... You'll notice the few complete TOTPs that have been repeated tend to be Christmas shows which are ready-made 'best of' compilations.

(And that's just my opinion, not the BBC's, by the way)

It's good news that the name hasn't been forgotten and carries on in some form. Personally though I prefer to see whole shows as they were at the time, good and bad acts alongside each other - it's exactly what makes them interesting (and obscure doesn't nessesarily mean bad either; lots of excellent stuff made it's way onto TOTP over the years that has been totally forgotten). I hate clips shows as a rule; only the famous acts that are overexposed anyway get a look in with the result that anything else is airbrushed out of history, as if it didn't happen in the first place.

Bring on the complete shows!

My sentiments as well. Do we really need Steve Wright and captions. It would save the BBC a fortune to just show the performances with the DJ intro & outro and absolutely nothing else.

Interesting reply from the BBC Gary.

Who did you write to in the first place?

If I may widen this topic slightly I have a question which someone may be able to answer.

There are four shows from the 70's that I would like to watch which unfortunately weren't repeated on UK Gold. I have resigned myself to the fact that they will probably never be released commercially on DVD.

Although it would cost me a lot of money I would be prepared to pay for a VT Engineers time (I think it's £100 per copy) to have a copy of each show and sign any contract necessary stating I won't make copies etc. (they could even put them on a copy protected DVD).

However the BBC won't do this "unless you have made a significant contribution to the show". What's the difference between me as a license payer and fan of the show paying a VT Engineer to do this for me and someone who's made a contribution to the show??

There are more than just four shows from the early '70s that weren't repeated on UK Gold (or anywhere else for that matter), the 15/10/70 edition and 25/2/71 editions being prime examples (not to mention the three b/w ones from early '70). Will we ever get a chance to see these complete I wonder?

I'm glad TOTP2 is back in a way but it's just "business as usual" (i.e. Steve Wright talking "wittily" over songs plastered with captions). A better bet would be a second series of Sounds Of The Sixties / Seventies; at least you just got one caption at the start and no voice-over at all. As we speak, I expect for future weeks they're cueing up the VT of the same over-exposed clips (Procol, Foundations, Status Quo, Move, Sweet etc.) when there are great unrepeated performances in the BBC archive from the '60s and '70s that would make any edition of TOTP2 far more exciting. I can identify them for you if you want, BBC - there are loads!
Re: TOTP2
Post by leechm on Oct 5, 2006, 2:44pm

I agree - I want to see "San Bernadino" by Christie in full from 15-10-70. I have a snippet (about 1 minute of footage) of it, but it would be nice to see the whole performance. I doubt it has been shown in full since the original broadcast.
Re: TOTP2
Post by laurencepiper on Oct 5, 2006, 7:17pm

They have shown it on TOTP2 in full at least once (in the days when they used to show four performances from a year in a block) along with Hollies / Rattles etc. - all from that same show.
Re: TOTP2
Post by leechm on Oct 5, 2006, 7:41pm

Do you know which TOTP2?? The did a 15-10-70 Recorded For Recall on the 9-11-96 edition of TOTP2, but this featured The Rattles, Matthews' Southern Comfort, Deep Purple and The Hollies only. Must have been between 1994- and November if it was shown.

So the BBC think it wise to show the same stuff time and time again I mean next week New Order Blue Monday Roy Orbison Pretty woman needless to say I won't be watching TOTP2 again and I expect neither will loads of other people when they realise it's all the same stuff being shown.

Shame on you BBC get it sorted.

I think a few of us should combine as a group with the view of getting hold of some of the TOTP shows stuck in the archives such as the 11/10/73 Kenny Everett show. I will be in a position shortly to offer financial backing (within reason) to any such project, and I aren't just thinking of the early 70's, there are shows going well into the 80's that haven't been repeated but would be well worth having

Presumably the content of the whole show is here? Would the end credits have been run over studio shots as well, prior to the chunks being edited together? If so, this could be edited into the version of the programme as transmitted.

Hi
I've been lurking on this forum for a few weeks and just decided to join in.
I've noticed that TOTP2 seemed to have listened and are showing 2 "new" clips next weekend. :)
Here's the lineup:
"There are archive classics from Roxette, Bonnie Tyler, Meat Loaf, and Brian & Michael, plus footage of the Byrds and Cockney Rebel never seen on TOTP2 before, an LS Lowry-style video exclusive from Oasis and a brand new performance from Amy Winehouse"
Re: TOTP2

whats the byrds track and cockney rebel one called?
Re: TOTP2

That was my next question ;)
Anyone have any more info on next weeks show yet?
Re: TOTP2
Post by ronoctane on Oct 16, 2006, 7:12pm

I think that "Mr Soft" was found on the recently unearthed 15/8/74 Noel Edmonds & Osmonds hosted edition. Theres a good chance it could be that performance which will be shown. No idea on the Byrds though.

Hi Laurence. I reckon the show always did exist but was mis-filed due to it not being a regular edition of TOTP.

Thanks Neil. Definitely worthwhile for the clip of Mr.Soft, i'd say! Is it a studio clip, film promo or what?
Re: TOTP2
Post by neil on Oct 16, 2006, 10:48pm

It's filmed in a studio but doesn't look anything like the TOTP studio and there is no audience.

Many people thought the Sylvia performance on 27/12/74 was taken from a BBC variety show but it is actually taken from this edition of TOTP.

Re: TOTP2
Post by laurencepiper on Oct 17, 2006, 11:26am

It can do both though - entertain and be interesting to the fans. If they fall back on the same ol' clips yet again though, the public will also get sick of it and turn off (and isn't it insulting to the general public anyway to just assume they can be palmed off with tired material?!?). Not to mention the fact that TOTP2 seems to have very poor researchers working on it; that's the only reason I can find for the wealth of pop material that sits in the archive remaining unseen (it's not hard to locate).
Re: TOTP2
Post by paulwatkins on Oct 22, 2006, 10:30am

Well i see they partly conned us again.
Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel was 'Mr Soft' from the recently unearthed 15/8/74 Noel Edmonds & Osmonds hosted edition. but the Bryds was from an american pop show (i think it's off a show called 'Hollywood a gogo').

Next weeks show is back to normal.(no new clips)

'''''The Jam, Haysi Fantaysee, Def Leppard, Tasmin Archer, Girls Aloud, Leo Sayer, Icicle Works and Tracey Ullman are the blasts from the past, and there's a new performance from Vincent Vincent and the Villains ''''
Re: TOTP2
Post by laurencepiper on Oct 22, 2006, 12:24pm

Ah, I was wondering where that Byrds clip came from! Mind you, I was thinking it was from European TV as there didn't seem to be any evidence of motion blur in the VT conversion. The Harley and Byrds clips were at least more interesting and less seen items; I hope they continue this trend in future. I just wish they wouldn't deface the clips with those damn captions.

"Archive material from Culture Club, Moby, Tight Fit, 10cc, Madness, The Charlatans and The Tourists, and new performances from All Saints and Gnarls Barkley."

Come on Totp2 show some new archive stuff
This is the second week in a row that BBC2 Wales have dropped the show (only 4 weeks into it's run). Signs of things to come??

I noticed that this week, the show was broadcast in it's native 4:3 aspect ratio.... well, apart from the new playout at the end, which was letterboxed of course.... but at least they've stopped zooming and cropping it .... makes sense to show it in 4:3 as, apart from the new performances, the majority of the show is 4:3 originally.....

Wonder if this will continue..... ?!!!

Missed the weekend show and the Jam performance. I see the new Paul Weller DVD "Hit Parade" has some TOTP performances where a promo video wasn't made.

2. All Around The World - Recorded for Top of the Pops. First transmitted July 21 1977.
3. The Modern World - Recorded for Top of the Pops. First transmitted November 3 1977.
5. David Watts - Recorded for Top of the Pops. First transmitted September 7 1978.
7. Down In The Tubestation At Midnight - Recorded for Top of the Pops. First transmitted October 19 1978.
10. The Eton Rifles - Recorded for Top of the Pops. First transmitted November 15 1979.
21. Beat Surrender - Recorded for Top of the Pops. First transmitted December 2 1982.

It says these are in stereo, if this is true it will be the first time the re-recorded versions of Modern World and Beat Surrender will be released in stereo.

Matt WHO do you know that trades TOTP material?

YOU must be sick of seeing the same performances as the rest of us, yeah?

As a Slade fan, when was the last time you saw Gypsy Roadhog 20/01/1977 tape No LLV1798B

OR:

Blue Peter TX 17/01/1977 tape No LCH2092N

Let me guess, when originally TX?

I could go on, or are you friends with the Slade Management Newman & Co and already have this footage?

BTW typical Slade fan can't spell "entertaine" "tradeing"

What is wrong with wanting to see the amazing footage You, I and everybody else on this board KNOWS EXISTS

Or would you rather this footage never see the light of day again?

There are plenty of people on this board and others, that have fought long and hard to get this footage shown in the first place, over many years: Boxpops, Sounds of, TOTP2 ect ect without us YOU would never have even seen the footage shown in the past, never mind you taping it.

Yeah I noticed that too, although as it was the first one of this series I'd caught, I just assumed they'd been doing that since the beginning. It certainly makes sense anyway, since TOTP was filmed in 4:3 until the last 5 years or so, and even the most recent ones, although filmed in 16:9, were presumably shot to be 4:3 'safe' for those not watching on digital. So they shouldn't suffer too much if shown in 4:3.

I certainly hope it continues tonight.

Would I be correct in saying Andrew that also apart from the 1967 Xmas show, the other 1960s prints are non broadcast standard. This is as some have the DJ links mute, jumps on vision due to edits and marred soundtrack sections on prints.

The DJ links or some acts are also mute on the clutch that Cable T.V. didn't repeat. This I would think would be why they aren't shown, but it doesn't prevent the use of them in complete forms as extras on some form of TOTP DVD.

I looked this up on Infax. There it comes under a TOTP related index, but is listed as 'The Osmonds day 4'. It seems to be a series with successive show numbers (day 3, day 4 etc.) rather than TOTP featuring some of the TOTP DJs and some archive clips from TOTP i.e. 'Mr Soft' and CCS 'whole lotta love'. As far as I could make out anyway.

Abba, Swing Out Sister, Chas and Dave, Jason and Kylie, the Leyton Buzzards, Barbara Dickson and the Pet Shop Boys. Plus a rare vintage performance from Van Morrison, a new one from Damien Rice and an exclusive look at the new Shakira video.

Rare Morrison? 1974 clip from film shot for OGWT. Have they been shopping at Morrison's again?

It gets worse:

Sat 2nd Dec 06:

With Adam Ant, the Four Tops, the Carpenters, Ozzy Osbourne, Britney Spears, Kool and the Gang and Take That, and new performances from The Fratellis and Nelly Furtado.
