Thing is with a 'prog' episode, you'd be lucky to get three tracks in, in the time.

I agree that what constitutes "prog" is difficult to define, but you could get a pretty decent prog(ish) special from surviving TOTP footage:
Argent - Tragedy Uriah Heep - The Wizard Family - In My Own Time Strawbs - The Hangman and the Papist Jethro Tull - Witch's Promise Atomic Rooster - Tomorrow Night Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Joybringer East of Eden - Jig a Jig (audience dancing) Focus - Sylvia (film clip) Hawkwind- Silver machine (film clip)
And not one of 'em over five minutes!
It's a shame about all the prog bands whose TOTP appearances got wiped - Caravan, Yes, King Crimson, Audience, Fairfield Parlour et al. And don't even get me started on what the BBC did to Colour Me Pop and Disco 2.

They said this new series of 'Sounds Of The Seventies' would not repeat footage from the first series. Well, the 1970 colour Top Of The Pops performance of 'The Witch's Promise' by Jethro Tull was broadcast in show 4 in the first series.

But Witches Promise has been shown a few times... but I'd welcome plenty more screenings, classic performance and track that it is!
Family - 'Weavers Answer' MUST be screened someday though... thats my biggest current wish for broadcast out of the many on the 'unbroadcast' list.

Did anyone else notice that the Bad Company "Can't Get Enough" performance was shot entirely by just one camera? It was a pretty impressive piece of camera-work, but was wondering why it was done this way. I think this was the last episode before the strike in the summer of 74, maybe the rest of the crew were already out and only one guy was left...??

""Hi Mark,
Happy New Year!
Firstly, the 04/07/1972, broadcast 06/07/1972 edition of TOTP with Starman on it does not exist at the BBC IN FULL. There are a couple of isolated performance - the other the New Seekers 'Circles', and that's it.

As for the shows unbroadcast pre-1976 here's that list - 26-12-67 and 15-2-68 were shown a couple of years back on BBC4 so I've left them off the list:
6-6-68 - show is incomplete with the links between songs mute so cannot be shown in its original form 27-2-69 - show is incomplete with the links between songs (apart from the first two links) mute so cannot be shown in its original form. 29-1-70 5-2-70 26-2-70 15-10-70 - links are mute 14-1-71 - I think the links between songs are mute on this one as well - footage I've seen of Badfinger has mute Jimmy Savile link at the start. 25-2-71 - again I think the links are mute on this 29-4-71 17-6-71 1-7-71 - links are mute 27-12-71 30-12-71 - show only exists unedited - Ed Stewart's links are mute and its full of retakes 22-6-72 - titles and first song missing, weak colour, apparantly being 'vidfired' at BBC. 16-11-72 28-12-72 25-1-73 1-2-73 27-9-73 11-10-73 - I think this only exists unedited - possible mute links with Kenny Everett but would need checking 15-11-73 20-12-73 25-12-73 27-12-73 - 10 years of TOTP special 11-4-74 2-5-74 8-8-74 15-8-74 4-10-74 7-11-74 - this is the Dick Emery incomplete recovery Queen excerpt shown on BBC. 25-12-74 27-12-74 2-1-75 27-2-75 - insert tapes are definitely at the Beeb as I've seen them (including the broadcast plates and blank chart rundown) 13-3-75 20-3-75 10-4-75 24-7-75 28-8-75 4-9-75 23-12-75 25-12-75""
These are broadcast quality or NEAR broadcast quality (may be the odd fluctuation in picture, or low-grade colour etc, Hot Chocolate and ELO are two examples) of shows and orphaned clips.
There are also a number of others that the BBC could get access to that have not been shown, but released somewhere on DVD (some Who, Wings, DDDBMT, for example), and a number of performances (and mainly well-loved artists, such as T Rex, Slade and Lulu) in the ZDF archive, all broadcast quality.
There is also a clip of Bad Company, 06/06/1974, shown partially on the Beeb on Jools Holland, but not in full since transmission.
I may be going somewhat above my station here, but, nothing ventured, nothing gained, but would you like me to come up with, say 20-40 titles of performances that the BBC have (or can get fairly easily), that were broadcast in the 70's, and have not been shown in full since?
Regards, Ray.""

Quite a bit of this info (most) was from Paul Watkins, a bit from Pete Seaton, and some was Neil Barker.... but the email was from me.

Heh, if you trace the line back, a lot of that info will have come from me originally, via the BBC TOTP website database, a lot of the info for which I researched at BBC Caversham Written Archives (I still have all the reams of paperwork)! These things eventually filter down to other websites and various people make claims on the info

Hi Ray, great work on that list but shouldn't you include two performances of 'Instant Karma'? My mate BP Fallon appears in both, his 'tambourine' version being the most famous but his performance on 'Bass' guitar was included recently on the wonderful 'Lennon Legend' DVD.
