I was passed some information a couple of years back regarding some TOTP holdings that the Beeb had - mainly Pan's People stuff.
I have been working on ascertaining whether the list was genuine since, and made various official and unofficial enquiries and I am now delighted to confirm that the following clips exist at the BBC:-
PERFORMANCES:- TJ White, Groupie Girl 21/05/1970 Tremeloes, Me and My Life 03/09/1970
Pan's People Green River 01/01/1970 I Want You Back 12/02/1970 Mama Told Me Not to Come 20/08/1970 Montego Bay 10/09/1970 Walkin 01/04/1971 Finders Keepers 20/07/1973
All are isolated orphan clips!!!!
I also hope to have details of a 1967 find (outside the BBC) of a TOTP performance this month....an ickle find....

Excellent news there - 2 more performances, now eligible candidates for June's MBW. No doubt great news for Pan's People fans too. Sorry, but I've never cared for them so am less than thrilled about those clips but good more 1970 vintage TOTP clips have been confirmed as existing.

they've had at least clips of "I Want You Back" and "Montego Bay" since 1994 because they used them in "Digging The Dancing Queens".

Excellent news! I hope the BBC can see fit to work all these rarely/never shown clips into upcoming TOTP2 episodes alongside the inevitable Starman et al.
I guess the Pan's People/Green River footage is the rehearsal where one of the girls loses the plot occasionally.

The footage was never absolutely confirmed that it was safe in the BBC Archives, but I can confirm it is.

The Pans People clip frugging to Sly - on film - in the empty department store has definitely appeared on TOTP2. Remember being very surprised to see it given the minimal amount of 1972 TOTP material TOTP2 had to play with.

At least a couple of the items Gary lists (e.g. Persuaders and Henry VIII clips) are in the group of specially made TOTP film inserts which exist in the archives. All date from roughly the early '70s, although most have not been aired since first transmission. Not sure if the BBC have got round to transferring these from the negs / film elements yet but there are quite a lot of them. These are generally known about but are a different set of clips to the ones Ray is talking about (which are on VT and come from the Bob Pratt tapes).

The Listings at the BFI site really need to be sorted. There are many listings for totp that no longer exists at the BBC. (Christmas 72 for one).
Are they in the BFI vaults, or not?

The BFI database of EXISTING material is better accessed via the your film archives site. This hopefully will be a good link....I hope. unionsearch.bfi.org.uk/

I see they problem here. I was given that link by the BFI - is it worth you emailing them, or shall I do it Monday. If, so, let me know by PM if you want me to do it!

This is one that has gone on for ages! The BFI TV database listings are pretty meaningless (and confusing) because neither are they a complete index of all programmes made of any given series NOR are they an index of what's actually in the archive.
I wish they would make it one or the other as it lists many programmes that the BFI (or any archive) do not hold, although it gives the impression that they do!
