For me >>>

30-12-65: Presenter: Pete Murray (Wiped) (6) THE WALKER BROTHERS My Ship Is Coming In

21-12-67: Presenters: Jimmy Savile & Keith Skues (Wiped) (13) SIMON DUPREE & THE BIG SOUND Kites
12-9-68: Presenter: Pete Murray (Wiped) (12) THE CASUALS Jesamine
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The best TOTP episode ever broadcast? This episode in my view is the ultimate. Even better than the legendary 16.6.1966!
25-12-65: Presenters: Jimmy Savile, Alan Freeman, Pete Murray & David Jacobs (Wiped)
THE MOODY BLUES Go Now SANDIE SHAW Long Live Love ELVIS PRESLEY Crying In The Chapel (video) THE BEATLES I Feel Fine (video) THE ROLLING STONES The Last Time GEORGIE FAME & THE BLUE FLAMES Yeh Yeh UNIT 4 PLUS 2 Concrete And Clay THE BEATLES Ticket To Ride (video) KEN DODD Tears THE ROLLING STONES (I Cant Get No) Satisfaction THE BYRDS Mr. Tambourine Man (video) THE BEATLES Help (video) SONNY & CHER I Got You Babe TOM JONES Its Not Unusual THE KINKS Tired Of Waiting For You THE SEEKERS Ill Never Find Another You THE HOLLIES Im Alive THE ROLLING STONES Get Off My Cloud JACKIE TRENT Where Are You Now (My Love) THE RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS Youve Lost That Lovin Feelin THE WALKER BROTHERS Make It Easy On Yourself (3) THE SEEKERS The Carnival Is Over (1) THE BEATLES Day Tripper (video)
Compare the quality of performers on this Christmas day episode from 1965 to the talentless manufactered puppets of 25/12/2011.
It's enough to make a grown man cry.

Top marks to John Henshall for keeping the brilliant Bowie clip and making sure the World sees it - it really has made my Christmas complete! I've never forgiven the BBC for deleting my memories. As for the holy grail of wiped appearances...
1) Maggie May - Rod Stewart (the alternative performance where the Faces swap their intruments - absolutely hilarious and better than the existing Peel one)
2) The three wiped Faces performances - Flying / Had Me A Real Good Time / Cindy Incidentally
3) Iko Iko - Long John Baldry with Rod and Elton on backing vocals
4) The Christmas Day 1972 show
5) The episode mentioned above featuring Cockney Releb, Sparks and Queen
Thanks John - I can't wait to find out what else is in your collection.
And for anyone who's interested, the missing believed wiped Faces TOTP performance of Stay With Me from January 1972 DOES exist. Andy Neill's recent Faces book confirmed that it was not a TOTP studio take as previously thought but a taster from the 1 /4/72 BBC2 Sounds For Saturday Faces show.

All the Young Dudes/Mott the Hoople would love to see. Seaside Shuffle/Terry Dactyl as well but for me Judy Teen/Cockney Rebel is the Holy Grail. The fact the show took place during a strike at the Beeb makes even more sought after. As someone already mentioned Showaddywaddy's debut was on this same edition with the boys performing on the Morecambe and Wise set!! Please say this is in your collection John!!!

Deep Purple never performed Strange Kind of Woman on Top of the Pops. There was a promotional video done for the show, which appears on the DVD History, Hits & Highlights 1968-76.

I think any pre-72 stuff is perhaps wishful thinking, thought time will tell. The 2 most recent performances discovered from 1973 show us that TOTP could be electrifying and live (Jean Genie) or make even a simple lip-synch absolutely fascinating (Stuck In The Middle With You) at that point in time, and if the (not quite complete) show found in Dick Emery's tapes shows 1974 wasn't half bad either

Ah. it was so long ago and memories play tricks. That's my excuse, anyway.
Ok, I'll opt for them doing Fireball on TOTP then!

I don't have the PasB to hand but I think i'm right in saying they didn't perform Fireball on TOTP. They did do it on Disco though, which survives.
