Anybody know the tx date of the edition including Family, Richie Havens and Thunderclap Newman? I’m assuming they were all on the same show and that this is the only survivor of the 1969 series (which went out in a late night slot, hence the revised title.)
Known performers….
1968 series - How it is 19th July 1968 - The very first edition including Yoko Ono, Arthur Brown and a feature on Yellow Submarine. 26th July 1968 - Eric Burdon / Pentangle 2nd August 1968 - Mike Stuart Span 23rd August 1968 - The Nice (Presumably this edition is the source of their performance of "America" on “Sounds of the Sixties” 6th September 1968 - Moody Blues 20th September 1968 - Status Quo 27th September 1968 - Tyrannosaurus Rex 11th October 1968 - The Who "Magic Bus" / Spooky Tooth "The Weight" 25th October 1968 - Pentangle 1st November 1968 - Pentangle (A bit odd for them to be on 2 weeks running, maybe they cancelled on the 25th October) 22nd November 1968 - The Gun (also some film used to illustrate the Beatles White album which was released the same day) 13th December 1968 - Fairport Convention
1969 series - How Late it is 14th March 1969 - The Who "Pinball Wizard" 21st March 1969 - Led Zeppelin (as a last minute replacement act) 25th April 1969 - Chicken Shack 2nd May 1969 - John Lennon & Yoko Ono interview
Peter Asher (Peter and Gordon fame) was one of the presenters on the first show, but appears to have only done that one or left early on, possibly replaced by John Peel. Tony Palmer directed and also appeared, Angela Huth was on both series. Oz magazine editor Richard Neville was another regular face of the programme.

All I can ascertain is it seems to be May 1969, which would make it either episodes 7 or 8, 9, 10 or 11. That doesn't help much, I know. Something in the Air was released that month. RICHIE HAVENS WAS IN THE US ON THE 4TH, SO THAT MAY RULE OUT EPISODE 7.

Would be lovely to see a whole edition on BBC4, it sounds very interesting from what I’ve read about it. Apparently Tony Palmer became frustrated with everybody assuming it was for teenagers, which is why it was moved to a late slot in 1969.
The Family clip (performing “Dim” released on an LP in March) is apparently from a Bob Pratt tape, so I guess that could come from a separate show, but I think he also taped the Thunderclap Newman set and the presenter looks as though she’s wearing identical clothes and sitting in the same spot to introduce Richie Havens, so maybe he recorded near enough a whole show rather than this being an officially archived example? There’s a transcript of the John & Yoko interview floating around, but I would think that’s come from a home taped audio that’s still locked in somebody’s private collection, so I doubt that interview is from the same edition - and as you say - Havens was still in the US then.
They obviously liked Pentangle during the 1st series, guesting at least twice. There’s BBC clips of them doing “Travelin’ Song” and “Let No Man Steal Your Thyme”, which doesn’t look as though they came from "How it is" , but I’ve yet to see a source programme nailed down for those numbers.

It's from 'Degrees of Folk'.
""DEGREES OF FOLK: with The Pentangle, Dixie Ingram, Alex Duthart (1968)"" (exists)
""The excitement generated by Pentangle’s unique sound is captured near the quintet’s inception in two BBC (Degrees of Folk) performances from 1968. “Traveling Song” was actually a single, released in May 1968 (and) “Let No Man Steal Your Thyme,” with its spacey free improvisation over the 1 chord in the solo""
(from John Renbourn, rare performances 1965-1995)
Sorted!

Yes, me too, Ray!
By the way, Syd, there will be no chance of BBC-4 showing a complete How It Is as none survive. All that's left are a few clips and some inserts. All those VT bits mentioned above plus one or two more (The Nice / Joe Cocker?) and some film reports. I think they're all from different shows though.
I looked at the PasBs for this series some time back and it's a real shame more doesn't exist as it looked to be an interesting show. Another one that's been almost forgotten historically (as with Disco 2) due to it's non-existence.

Does anyone know what song Led Zeppelin performed and if any footage exists?

Joe: I was just able to find this bit of information here for you. www.ledzeppelin.com/show/march-21-1969Looks as if this sadly no longer exists. However, at least we now know which track was being performed ( Communication Breakdown ) Cheers, Lance.

There is a poor quality clip of what purports to be the Zeppelin performance from this show circulating (and has been around for years). I've seen it myself. You just get the song though and no surrounding material for identification. It's, I guess, likely that the insert survives (a while since I looked at it but I think it was a film insert; the quality was not that great and so it was hard to tell!).

I doubt that Led Zep clip is from “How Late it is”, it’s looks a little too amateurish in terms of the camera work and the way it’s shot for the BBC in 1969, and I’d also expect them to appear on the same stage/set as Family and Thunderclap Newman. I know Richie Havens was filmed against a light background, but I’d imagine they only broke with tradition there for the shadow effects.
