Chris, the TOTP material was from domestic 1", not broadcast 1", so the dub (if it is a dub and not a straight recording direct from the broadcast) would have been made somewhere around the time, not the early 80s. Notwithstanding this, 1" C was available at the BBC in 1978 and slowly infiltrated the broadcast industry over the next few years. Cheers for explaining the situation, Mark. I was getting my hopes up there regards the orig. master!

It was all good though and I should point out that everyone involved in the restoration of the three programmes did it all for no recompense. No recompense apart from the undying gratitude of those who attended. The Look! Hear! stuff was the highlight of the day for me, particularly the Swinging Cats, and it all looked far too good to have come from VHS, so thanks for the explanation. BBC West had equivalent shows, including RPM, and an earlier one the name of which escapes me, but which included very early performances by XTC, among others. I mentioned these to Dick on Saturday, in hopes that a regional music shows event might be a goer.

It has to be said, by the way, that those Those Look Hear recordings were the best quality VHS i've EVER seen! Thanks for the episode guide, Paul.

Paul, Thanks for the episode guide, I was wondering what bands were on the other episodes as you've mentioned that they all now survive. What's the chance of being able to see the other numbers by The Beat at a future date? Let's hope something can be shown on BBC4 lika a two tone/ska/reggae compilation of the material that exists. There's probably enough for a rock/heavy metal compilation as well.

There's probably enough for a rock/heavy metal compilation as well. Hi Sal, The tracks by 'The Beat' were Big Shot, Mirror in the Bathroom and Ranking Full Stop. Up until the very last minute Mirror in the Bathroom was in the cut. But my view was that Big Shot was such a blistering performance (and Mirror in the Bathroom TV performances are not rare) that I should replace it. I think it was the right choice although all three tracks are great. As for getting these tracks seen; well, that isn't for me to decide. What I can tell you is that in the mid 1990's 'The Beat' management approached the BBC with a view to licensing the performances for a compilation video. At that time we didn't have the recordings. I have informed them we now do have them, so you never know. It wouldn't stop the BFi screening either entire programmes or extracts in the future. Look! Hear! used to run credits over the third track of the main act so those performances are tainted by that. But in the case of 'The Selecter' and Too Much Pressure it seemed to work. The clean version of that performance must have survived until at least the end of the series because when it was reprised in the last programme of 1980, it had a different set of credits running over it almost in the same place. Tracks from the other bands are listed in the Look! Hear! thread which is stickied. I'll see if I can pull together a full track listing for the series. Cheers, Paul

Thanks to all those people who made the music event so good on Saturday. Also to those who worked hard at getting the quality to be the best they could. I was also blown away by the quality of Look Hear and thought I was watching purely broadcast tapes!
The icing on the cake had to be the Top of the Pops material from 1967 and I really do hope that further improvements can be made to the vision.
Thank you for the details on the material you found, Paul, and for the dates and listings of the artists. Any more hints on the material Dick Fiddy suggested you might be uncovering for next year's event?
Dave

As is usual with these things I'm following up a variety of leads in places not normally looked at. Who knows what I'll find. There are two major music series I'm looking into which may show some new (as in previously missing) material, but I haven't seen anything and it's all talk for now... and even if it wasn't, I couldn't talk about it. Also, I believe it when I see it, so at the moment any discovery of anything is hypothetical! Cheers, Paul

That's a very good approach. In the software industry there is, or was, a term "vapourware" which referred to something that had been announced but had yet to appear.

Two major music series? Are we talking television? Sounds highly promising. I sincerely hope this bears fruit. Please keep us up to speed on it, Paul!

It's a long time ago, but I don't think that's correct. The first production tests of broadcast 1" at the BBC were on A format Ampex machines, and though I don't remember the year, it was definitely later than 1976, more likely 1979 or 80. I know because the trails department where I was a producer did the first trials (and I wasn't there till 1977), and trials they really were. The machines were very unreliable, and we only had four of them. We would make the trails on 1" - or 2" if they were currently broken - then transmit off 1" or 2", depending on what was most expedient. It was hell, and we stopped after three weeks.

I have a lot of rare XTC regional stuff inc. RPM (XTC - Play At Home) and BBC Bristol appearances including a lovely (though time-coded) copy of XTC At The Manor from 1980.
If the regional event is a go-er just give me a shout.

So It Goes from Granada would be another great regional choice, along with the last Discs a go go from TWW.

Yes, Discs-a-Gogo from TWW would be great. The final edition exists in the archives in pristine video quality. I think an earlier telerecorded edition survives as well.
