Lost 1960 Billy Fury TV Clip Found!
« Thread Started on Jan 2, 2009, 5:58pm »

As you all know, 2008 was the best year for lost TV discoveries in a long time. I just got back from my Xmas vacation and am slowly catching up on my mail and stuff, so please be patient... I will get round to all of you over the next few days.

I received this exciting link to a newly discovered clip of Billy Fury on The Jean Carroll Show in 1960. This was rediscovered by the renowned Ron Furmanek and he generously shared this with the official Billy Fury site for fans to watch and enjoy. As you can see from the notes accompanying the clip, Ron is certain that this heralds from British TV. However, what this came from, where or when it was broadcast etc is currently a mystery, so here's hoping that some of you here may be able to fill in some details which I'm sure Billy's family and Ron would gratefully appreciate.

Check it out here...

It's a lovely discovery since as we know there isn't much pop TV footage about from before 1964 and 1960 was a big year for Billy Fury.

Hope you all enjoy it and that somebody can maybe identify it and provide more details about it.

Fascinating clip Peter. I wonder if its from one of the many ATV Saturday Spectaculars which aired from 1957-1961. Anybody and everybody who was famous at that time had their own hour long tenure of the show at some point.
It is believed well over 100 of these shows still survive uncatalogued on original 16mm film at Perrievale. Unfortunately very few have been transferred for viewing in 50 years which is a disgrace. Even though the shows format now looks very dated, imagine how much income could be generated for Granada International through clip sales alone!

Peter E. thanks for this.
I agree with your deduction that this may well be from the ATV "Val Parnell Spectacular" series ?
The music is very dynamic and thus very Jack Parnell sounding.
Dave King was also a regular on this series .
If somebody can see the credit roll then a producer such as Dicky Leeman or Bill Ward would confirm it.

Interesting feedback and I'm delighted you have all enjoyed seeing this... definitely a nice piece of treasure since I think most of us would never had dreamed of a 1960 Billy Fury clip turning up!

Since this was clearly The Jean Carroll Show and the fact that during that time many visiting American stars, not always well known in Britain were given one off showcases is interesting... I'd never heard of her myself until today. Billy Fury I believe never got to perform in America which was a bugbear of Larry Parnes. In 1962, there was demand for The Tornados to go over to America but Parnes told the Americans that they would have to take Billy Fury as well and the deal was scuppered much to the fury of Joe Meek who managed The Tornados - don't forget The Tornados were Billy's live backing band at the time - Meek really hoped to see The Tornados performing "Telstar" on TV broadcast in Britain via the Telstar satellite, but because of Parnes, it was never to be. It was a disastrous conflict of interests and egos with Parnes and Meek both being hot headed, bloody minded visionaries. Little wonder Fury and The Tornados soon parted company since Parnes and Meek couldn't agree on anything.

Interesting observations from PaulR and Peter Stirling regarding Val Parnell's spectaculars and I'm inclined to believe it could well be from one such edition given it's one off nature. I'd guess that Parnell and ATV were making T/R's of them and featuring American hosts in the hope of selling them to America and if that was the case then this show with Billy Fury certainly reached American shores though whether it was ever broadcast there or not I guess at present, is a mystery. ATV certainly tried to tap into the US market with the special Palladium shows in 1966.

My main knowledge of archive TV comes from 1964 onwards. Would I be right in guessing that these Saturday Spectaculars would had been billed in the TV Times something like "Val Parnell Spectacular - this week, The Jean Carroll Show"? Or were the names of the hosts not published? I'm guessing these would had been live broadcasts...

All most interesting stuff and I am thrilled we now have Billy Fury on British TV in his prime. Great work by Ron Furmanek in uncovering it!

Kaleidoscope Music & Variety guide 1950-1997

Val Parnell's Spectacular : The Jean Carole Show (ATV) recorded 23/06/60 - no transmission date available ( though that was 10 years ago - they may have a transmission date now ) held as 16mm TR

Well done David B ! problem solved!

Regarding Val Parnell I think his spectaculars ran from about 56 to 61 ? and by about 1964 his name had disappeared from everything altogether.
I dont they were particularly made with American market in mind as Billy (in that incarnation) is so obviously an Elvis wannabe ,
and many American guests they got, were in the afternoon of their careers in their own country.
but the VPSs remain fresh, glamorous tonics to the war and ration book weiry Brits.

Maybe Joe Meek's 60 odd tea chests full of recordings will also see the light of day one day ?

This is a very good new finding and I've enjoyed watching the recording. It makes you wonder how much more is out there of Billy Fury and other artists whose archive is non existent or exists very scarce inside and outside the broadcasters' archives.

Why oh why cant Granada get their finger out and transfer these old shows so they are available for researchers/producers to use?
If there are 100 plus surviving Saturday Spectacular shows, i would be fascinated to know which titles survive. Ive seen various clips from shows from this series by Alma Cogan, Johnnie Ray and Cliff Richard doing the rounds but is it too much too ask, 50 years on, to have a definitive list.
David can you tell me from the Kal guide if the edition from Saturday 15th August 1959 entitled 'Starlight Hour' survives? I believe it starred visiting US sex siren Jane Mansfield and also Cliff Richard with his backing group the Drifters. There are many Harry Hammond pictures from this show which are available from the V&A museum.

does this mean that this clip wasnt really missing, just not logged properly?

Thats probably correct Rich. The ATV/ITC catalogue has changed hand many times and i suspect many of the surviving Sat Spectaculars were logged about 15-20 years ago by the then owners Polygram. However it appears these records did not transfer with each subsequent change of ownership. Moreover each new owner showed total disinterest in them. I may be wrong on that one but i suspect this is the case.

Billy appeared only once in the French TVs on a b/w footage, with a guitar in his hands:

I found some Beatles Footage on the BBC Infax listing when it was publicly accessible that was unknown to the authors of the Beatles film & tv chronicles & they must be the most documented musicians in history so it's hardly suprising if a billy fury appearance goes unnoticed when it's from a largely uncatalogued series of programmes

The Kaleidoscope guide has nothing listed between 01/08/59 & 19/09/59 & nothing with a recording date but no transmission date that suggests it could fit in the gap.

Hopefully Chris Perry can shed some further light on this shows listings - It does appear as if they have matched up the archive holdings to transmission dates as best as possible and have not listed any episodes not held in the archive - It's likely to be more than a year until the music & variety guide gets revised as
I believe it's the turn of the comedy guide next

This does of course present the possibilty that a second unarchived "Jean Carole show" might be the source of the clip - but it's all conjecture until the show is properly researched.
