There are also b/w film recordings of many existing colour editions in private hands.

It doesn't surprise me at all although I hadn't specifically heard of this before, Andy. Do you have more details as it needs looking into.

On the BBC TOTP website theres an interview with Jimmy Savile where he states....

"I tell you something - TOTP and 'Jim’ll Fix It', to my knowledge, were the only two programmes that were pirated and shown in harems in Africa and the Middle East, because I’ve come across that on occasion."

I can only presume hes referring to videotape copies from after 1975 the year "Fix It" began but it does make one wonder when the pirating began. Perhaps some of these were film recordings of existing colour episodes?

Perhaps a low-key and discrete but persistant group should be formed... a few of us join forces and pool resouces in order to trace as much footage as we can. I realise the very nature of some collectors is to hound and badger people but perhaps if a small group is created that can seek out rare shows and footage, and (when necessary) club together & pay money, and do all of this in a professional confidential manner (therefore not encurring the wrath of the BBC or the more reclusive collectors who have this stuff) we might really get somewhere.....

Has anyone had any dealings with the person(s) behind that website with a vast array of rare telly & TOTP's listed? The URL I have forgotten, but I did get it from this forum last summer....

Is that list there for reference/boasting or for trades/swaps/purchases?

I have been wondering the same thing, if anything was ever done. If an offer was made or not. Would love to hear if anything of note has happened concerning this collection. I had been looking for that link for a while, thanks for reposting it Gary.

Cheers, Lance.

Fascinating to see the '69 footage; I'd virtually given up on seeing anymore 60's TOTP footage. Also pleased to read that B/W copies exist of various episodes. We know that other 'missing' colour footage is around (eg 'Junior's Farm' on 'Wingspan' and 'How Come' on the Ronnie Lane documentary) so if some people with the necessary skills are able to investigate all these leads, the chances of recovering lost episodes should be pretty good.

I have been trying to get a copy of the 500th show for the last 18 months. The guy who owns the library wants to sell it in a one off deal, and the last time I spoke to him he was talking about wanting 20K. He has sold some material to Queens management and he has promised me a copy of the 500th when he agrees an offer for the whole library. As the owner of the library is in his 80's it doesn't make it easy as sometimes when you ring him he is having a bad day and doesn't really want to talk. I will ring him again next week and see if he has sold the library yet and try and get my copy of the 500th. Like I say I have to be careful how I deal with him as I don't want him to dig his heals in even more.

Feasible I suppose, as part of a suggested group. Serious money yes, but we are talking some otherwise unavailable stuff - and there's a lot there other than Top Of The Pops!

This, I think, is a truly exceptional find - as this is the only TOTP presentation (titles/link) in existance in colour from the 1960's.

BBC1 launched it's offical colour service on 15 November 1969, although the first colour TOTP was not broadcast until the following week - this means that only around 7 editions (including the Xmas day special) were actually broadcast in the sixties in colour... so I guess it's a even more exceptional find.....

I know people have approached the person who has put this footage on 'You Tube' as obviously this begs further important questions like "Where did this originate from"? and of course, "Is there more of this footage exisiting that the clips on You Tube"?

Although of course, it's a relatively low-res You Tube file, the original source does appear to be in very good condition, so it would be very interesting to hear how this footage has come about .....

Obviously the start of the clip is just the end titles rehearsal, but I am presuming that the start of the show, is as shown further in the clip - although whether this was the final tx version I don't know.. I would have said it was, only the clip right at the end of the footage is more camera line-ups etc..

Still, although we already have a performance exisiting as a rehearsal test, namely Sandie Shaw's "Long Live Love" from 1965, it's great to see this footage - and more importantly in colour !!!!

Let's keep our fingers crossed that there is more of this out there !!!!

Regards

Paul (TOTP veteran !!!! 44 times in the audience !!!! )

PS - Has anyone had any luck in corresponding with the 'You Tube' poster in order to find out any more details about this clip? I notice he as the start (including countdown vt clock) of an edition from 29 April 1971 also on You Tube. It looks again to be very good quality... I know this does exist within the BBC archives and presumably the BBC hold the 625 colour VT copy?
