Yes - i've been trying to find someone who taped the whole run. So far no luck though (I ony kept a few editions myself). At the time (early / mid '80s), I was unsure of what TOTP did / didn't officially exist and so the appearance of a Floyd clip like that was interesting but not nessesarily of note (even though I was familiar with the studio set for that appearance from existing stills and so knew where it came from)!

Yes i agree we need someone who taped the complete shows from 1982-3. I taped a couple of answer clips but not the whole show & nearly fell off my chair when the Bowie clip was shown! VCR not ready either...buG*er! (I saw the original Bowie JG broadcast in Jan '73 so knew it was this clip)

Are you sure it wasn't the 1968 See Emily Play promo with Gilmour?

Absolutely not! I have a large framed blown-up colour photo of Floyd's Emily appearance on my wall here (and have had the shot since the '70s) and was aware of this TOTP from then. The clip on Pop Quiz that I saw was brief but it was a b/w t/r from the same studio set as the photo (mirrored backdrop, Syd on large cushion). I've never seen the clip used elsewhere since Pop Quiz so I can only conclude that Mike Reid was the obvious source...

I am going to Mike's pop quiz in Weston-super-Mare in a couple of weeks, so if I get to meet him I'll ask him about it.

This isn't the first time I've heard it mentioned that Mike Read may have some connection with the Emily clip from TOTP. Whether or not he has it in his personal possession is open to debate, but I'm sure if he has & was made aware of it's missing status, he may be more forthcoming with information. Good with teh detective work at the pop quiz Neil!!!

Oh, i'm sure MR is fully aware of what's not in the TOTP archive! Mind you, the Emily clip is reported to reside these days in the States by some commentators; maybe that was amongst the material taken from his car? If so, that may explain it's current location (i.e. sold on to someone overseas eventually). Just guessing here but who knows?

I take it you believe that the clips used still survive as complete performances or even some complete shows?(which would be great.)

Well, i'm told that very poor copies of the Emily clip are on sale in the States (although I haven't seen it myself). No reason to suppose the clip isn't complete though, if it survives...maybe the whole show. Who knows? If copies of Hendrix (and other) TOTP performances do the rounds as VHS recordings, there's no reason to suppose there aren't more out there somewhere (possibly clips sourced from whole shows?).

Are you referring to the Hendrix performance of Purple Haze (TOTP 30.3.67) ? That doesn't come from the bbc archive, it was shot at home by someone with an 8mm camera.

Does it? That's the first i've heard of that. You sure you don't mean the Hendrix /Dusty footage (which was an off-screen camera job)? The quality is so poor on my copy though that it's hard to say for certain what the source was. Whatever, there are a lot of t/r clips of missing TOTP floating around (e.g. Kinks, Manfred Mann etc) and I was just using the Hendrix as an example of what's out there somewhere.

No, it's definitely TOTP. I'm still looking for a copy of the Dusty footage. I saw a clip on a Dusty Springfield documentary some years ago but it caught me by surprise and I wasn't recording. I assume a longer clip exists than what was shown on the documentary. (I've got audio of the Hendrix appearance on that show).
There's also off-screen home recorded 8mm footage of Hendrix performing Foxy Lady & Wild Thing on Xmas On Earth 22.12.67 (a clip of Sgt Peppers from the same Perf can be seen at the start of the Monterey vid), I'm unsure which station this is recorded from or it's status in the archives.

I have an audio copy of the complete Dusty program that's pretty good for an off air recording.
Speaking of the Xmas on Earth footage. I used to have a Joe Cocker promo of With a Little Help From My Friends (of all things) that consisted of almost nothing but short clips of Xmas on Earth. The Floyd clip was very quick, only 2 seconds or so. The clips of the other acts were longer. I think the other acts included Hendirx, Eric Burdon, Soft Machine, maybe The Move...
BTW, I think the Hendrix Xmas on Earth footage is pro shot footage. I'm reffering to the footage of this event shown during the Jimi Plays Monterey film.
