BBC Worldwide has confirmed that the 1970 Doctor Who story The Ambassadors of Death will be released on DVD in full colour.

The seven episode story was made originally made in colour as part of the first Jon Pertwee season, but the only master tape to remain in the BBC archive is that of episode one. The rest of the story was only kept as sixteen millimetre black and white film.
A second generation colour copy does exist as an off air recording from WNED-TV in Buffalo, New York, and this was used to restore episodes five and six to colour for the 2002 video release. At the time, it was not possible to restore the remainder of the story.
With the advances in technology over the last decade, it is now possible to restore colour to the complete story. It was hoped to release the story last year, paired with the 1977 story The Sun Makers, however, problems with restoration process caused the release to be postponed in order to allow the restoration team more time to achieve the best results on the story.

It is expected that the DVD will be released later this year.

I even saw two screenshots from AOD in my brothers doctor who magazine.it was the scene where liz was trying to hitch a ride. One was the black and White one from the 2002 VHS and the bottom show the amazingly restored in colour version.and it says 'from monochrome on VHS, and the bottom one said 'to this!liz gives the thumbs up!,.

A friend text me to say he had just watched ep 1 and said they had done a fabulous restoration job. I text him back to watch ep 2 and then reply back. His text came back as " oh dear what a shame!" Still, its the best they could achieve with the resources they had! I still bought it soon as I could, and am looking forward to MOE

However good / bad Ambassadors looks now, it'll be a dramatic step up from how it used to be! Sometimes I think people expect too much (especially before having seen the thing themselves). Although I saw the story in 1970, I've never seen it in full colour before. So I'm greatly looking forward to it dropping through the letterbox.
One of my favourite Doctor Who stories from my favourite Doctor Who season of all!

I'm waiting for my copy but I bet Episode 1 on DVD with transform decoding and usual basic work will look so good that it will make the rest look worse than if they all were colour recovered or recombined with NTSC off-airs.

I expect that's why some people will be initially disappointed. The restorations won't obviously compare to an actual colour VT original and I expect the only way forward for further improvements to this story (and I'm sure there will be!) will be to combine colour recovery with colourisation (maybe by Babelcolour?) as was utilised on Planet Of The Daleks 3, which for me is one of the very best restorations of all so far. All the RT need now is the budget to make it happen..!
Roll on Mind Of Evil now.

I was aware of that John but my friend wasn`t! Hence why I asked him to watch the next episode and then tell me what he thought. May be I didnt make that clear enough. I am still waiting for bloody Amazon to deliver my copy which I pre ordered 6 weeks ago

I've just watched Ambassadors myself and was generally very pleased with the results, given the problems the team faced. Quality varies between episodes a bit (as I anticipated) but it's so nice to be able to own a copy of one of my favourite DW stories of all in full colour for the first time. I have no doubt though that AOD will be revisited in the future, tackled differently / with the benefit of further technical advances.
