 Radio 2 Jazz/Easy Listening archive
« Thread Started on Aug 14, 2012, 8:38am »

I have in storage my late father's collection of reel-to-reel, cassette and HiFi VHS Audio-only recordings from mainly Radio 2 and 3 during the late 1970s and 1980s.

He favoured the jazz and easy-listening programmes, so there's a brace of Alan Dell, David Jacobs, Benny Green, and others. He tended to cherry-pick the tunes he liked, but left the DJ links and introductions in place for each tune.

Mostly official material, since a lot of what these DJs played was from LP, and later CD, but there's a selection of live recordings in there as well - a Jazz Greats Festival from Birmingham in the early 1980s, George Shearing/Mel Torme, Sinatra, etc. Some Classical concerts from Radio 3 during the same period, too.

I'm not aware of any collector's groups specialising in this field, so if anyone here is interested, or knows of such groups, please advise.

Oh, and I still have the machinery capable of playing back and transferring all of these formats (4-track reel-to-reel, cassette, VHS) to digital...... I would have transferred them already, but for the fact that I'm busy transferring the stuff that I recorded from the mid-1970s from Radio 1 and the like......

Hello!

The chances are good that some of this material will be missing from the archives; the DJ links and live sets may well be the most interesting bits there.

As for transfering material, a word to the wise! You are probably already aware of this, but when transfering old material, mp3 is a dodgy format to do it in because of the loss in sound quality. FLAC or something similar is lossless quality and so a much better option :)

I expect someone around here will know of a vintage radio community that will be interested. alternativley you could contact Mr C Perry of Kaleidoscope. He is on here and so you could PM him :)

Hi there - I am trying to put together a library of my late father, Benny Green's recordings - I wondered if you'd be willing to share some of your tapes?
Grateful for any help, Best, Leo Green

Leo

It seems that the recent BBC Listeners' Archive project uncovered a large collection of your Dad's work. Producer Trevor Dann wrote about this back in October:

I'm not sure how much, if any, of this collection will ever make back on air.

Coincidentally someone wrote to me just a couple of weeks ago saying that his father had been an avid listener of Benny's show and had six shows on cassette that he listened to avidly but wondered if I had any shows that I could pass on to him for his father to listen to. I hope to send him a small number of recordings.

I'm planning a blog post about Benny sometime next year, hopefully. Without wishing to breach forum rules on trading please email me.
