Whilst looking on youtube I found this clip of Bruce Forsythe's Generation Game, with a BBC1 colour globe introduction. Cant be many clips of this colour globe, my guess is around 1972/73. www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmwnSlZswwE&feature=mfu_in_order&list=ULThou I know this Gen Game is most likely not to be missing, the continuity must be rare, thought others might like to see, also wondered if this poster had any other recordings of this time.

nice to see you, nice.......... one intact with its show and announcer is quite rare - this one was used until 1974
extended clean ones of 1970 and 1972 can be found on the Monty Python DVDs, they do have the pythons talking over them but they're very easy to edit off.
the 1976 and a few others are on Doctor Who DVD's

There are a lot of continuity fragments like this around from the mid '70s (usually on Philips 1500 off-air tapes or sometimes U-Matic) although i've no idea if this particular one exists elsewhere. They're nice to have though as the BBC generally will not have them on the beginnings / ends of the programmes in question (except in the cases of when they recorded them on to the master of a live programme such as 24 Hours etc.)

I've been curious as to the archive status of The Gen Game for a while now. I feel fairly safe that most, if not all, exist from 1972 or perhaps 1973 onwards, but we all know that 1971 was a dark year for VT retention, and although I seem to recall Bruce talking about the fact that the pilot still existed, as did the first show proper (which apparently was not broadcast - the pilot was instead). But even though those might have existed long enough to be shown during the timeframe of the first series, given that there was a 'best of' show of Series 1, I do wonder whether Series 1 itself was earmarked for wiping once the 'best of' bits had been culled and, if this was why the compilation itself was put together in the first place.
I don't know if Bruce had the clout to demand that all shows be kept although, given his insistence on having a slave camera on him at all times, he probably did. But what if Biddy Baxter demanded that the same spool of tape be used for an edition of Blue Peter if there were no more in the Engineering Department's stock at the time?

Just what I suspected. The show succumbed to what I call "Parkinson's Disease" ;D

According to the old Kal guide, the Best Of from series 1 exists on tape as well. I didn't know about the 16mm t/r of the first programme though!

But what if Biddy Baxter demanded that the same spool of tape be used for an edition of Blue Peter if there were no more in the Engineering Department's stock at the time? Biddy wouldn't have had the authority to demand that another programme be wiped in order to free up a tape to record Blue Peter. If no recycled tapes were available they would have made a film recording.

To clarify - Blue Peter was very very rarely recorded onto recycled tape. Almost always a brand new 60' or 90' spool. Programmes were film recorded as well as PasB'd onto 2", not instead of.
