Indeed this is a big problem and I confess being Guilty of it... had several hundred VHS tapes spanning 1990 to 2004 and I ended up junking the lot. Transferring them to DVD was a long winded headache that demands plenty of time and patience. I kept having playback problems and worse, some tapes wouldn't play back at all, in one or two cases I spent a week trying every trick in the book to get a signal from them. Several tapes fell apart pretty much the moment after I transferred them, snapping whilst rewinding them. There was nothing rare or lost in that collection as far as I know apart from continuity which given the chance would never be recorded anyway... always chopped out the ads. Only when I used the timer I'd end up with that kind of stuff... was of zero interest to me then, and remains so now I'm afraid.

Your tastes change over the years too. I have a considerable amount on tape that I'll probably never watch again. I'm thinking of "Spender" with Jimmy Nail.
Also a lot of Eastenders and Coronation Street from the 1980's. Both of which have been poisoned for me due to what they have turned into now. I still appreciate Corrie up to about 1985 But after that you begin to see the decline starting.

I still have all of my 'archive' VHS tapes (approx 50), and like many others have never quite got round to transferring most to DVD. Ironically, the 2 tapes I WOULD like to transfer, because they have 1980s kids programmes on which my grand-daughter might enjoy, I have found to be breaking down : after a few seconds they shed so much oxide onto the head that it is unwatchable. All the others I have are ok, as far as I know. I think there are 2 reasons for those 2 breaking down : 1) They are Currys own rather than a decent make ; 2) My own kids watched them over and over again when they were young. Nothing 'missing' , except a few seconds of Philip Schofield in the broom cupboard possibly!

10.12.83 Episode 11 - Elton John, The Police, Slade, Paul Daniels, Tracey Ullman, Russell Grant
Given that My Oh My by Slade was in the charts around the right time, and that you can just see Tracy Ullman in the studio at the end, I think this is a find.

Something about this clip worried me last night. I checked the Saturday SuperStore book last night and in the double page spread titled "The Biggest Pop Panel In The World", Tracey and Mike are seen in the clothing that they are wearing at the end of this clip. The book states that it's from the 17th and not the 10th of December. I hope the book is correct and that the above listing is wrong because also on the pop panel are Culture Club and Duran Duran. Not too bothered about Paul Daniels, Stu Francis and Russell Grant, but if this is the episode missing I think I will cry.
The Police are also pictured in the same feature.

"Saturday's regular Saturday Superstore (BBC1 9am) goes completely overboard just before Christmas with the Police, Duran Duran, Slade and Tracey Ullman all featured in the programme"
-Record Mirror (week ending 17th December 1983).
