The 1973 episode of Menace - Girls and Boys Come Out to Play is offically missing, along with all of season 2. But I've just come across a comment on a site entirely by accent, that says it exists at the BFI, and the writer of the comment says that they have seen it at the BFI. www.greenman.net/forum/ghost-box-belbury-poly-spoiler#comment-formthis site has nothing to do with archive tv or missing tv.

Very intriguing. It might be worth contacting the person to be sure he isn't mixing it up with something else. If not, perhaps the BFI should be contacted about the comment.
Be nice if it was found to exist. I'm not holding my breath though.

He's the full post:
This has got me started now! There was a BBC2 series early 70s called 'Menace'. There were a lot of episodes- most were on tape and wiped soon after transmission, but at least one- probably the best- surived in the BFI archieve- cos i SAW it. This was BOYS AND GIRLS COME OUT TO PLAY- a James Mactaggart script. I think it was a tidy copy, not a telerecording. And Penda's Fen was all 16mm colour, shot by Michael Williams- Dir was Alan Clark!! Totally unlike anything else he did.I'm off to the library to do some searching about these ghost stories.

He doesn't say when this happened though - in recent times or years ago? I also see he doesn't reply to your question as to how he managed to see it, even though he has posted there again. It might be better to try and contact him via PM off-forum about it though.

Nice one, Ray. I hope the BFI are actually clear about what they do have in their archive though!

I made an account yesterday and messaged Cyfarthfa1. I didn't expressly say that it was missing, just expressing an interest in trying to track down a copy. They have not replied yet, but they seem to be an active member of 'thegreenman' forum. Incidentally, the green man site has nothing to do with missing or archive telly, it is to do with music events, Boys and Girls come out to play was only brought up on the subject of 'folky' plays like Penda's Fen or Robin Redbreast being shown there.

The BFI have replied and only have the 2 episodes that are known about.

after saying that the play is missing, they haven't replied, this could probably be just because they haven'y been on the site to reply yet though. If it is a hoax, it seems odd to make one on a music festival website, and not somewhere like here?

Yes, it does. I'd think it was a case of the guy mixing this play up with something else he'd seen but he seemed to know his TV stuff (which, I suppose, points back again to it being a hoax). Let us know if you get a clear response from him anyway, Felix. This is a prime missing item and it would be nice to find it existed all along. I know this is unlikely but it has been the case in the past that the BFI had been unaware (or unclear) about material they had in their own archive (this happened recently with them identifying a Top Of The Pops edition from 1973 on t/r which was supposedly missing).

Is this episode titled "Girls and Boys" or "Boys and Girls" ? Maybe it's been archived with the words in the wrong order. I'm probably stating the obvious, but has anyone tried searching for the "wrong" title ?

Its 'Boys and Girls' according to lost shows.com. If you reverse the order, you don't get any results. The BFI database may operate in a similar manner.

Curious: the version I learned of the rhyme the title is derived from definitely did put Girls before Boys. after saying that the play is missing, they haven't replied, this could probably be just because they haven'y been on the site to reply yet though. If it is a hoax, it seems odd to make one on a music festival website, and not somewhere like here? I would point out that the post - and thread - in question date from last June, so it's perhaps not too suprising the poster hasn't seen your reply.
