 THE GOODIES
« Thread Started on Jan 13, 2012, 4:56pm »

Hi, I was just reading the BBC's list which states there are no missing episodes and then it goes on to list I think the seventh of series 2 as missing. Which is it? Missing or not? Plus do any of the B/W episodes have the potential to be colour conversion processed?

The original version Kitten Kong has been lost, I guess the BBC considered the Montreux Special version sufficent.

I do know some 16mm B&W copies of some episodes turned up in Australia.

The two on 16mm are Series 1 episode 4 "Caught in the act" (an episode which makes benny hill look tame) and Series 2 episode 2 "The commonwealth games".

Wasn't one of these episodes also found to exist on a low band VT with a weak colour signal (as with that June '72 TOTP edition) and was boosted a bit for the Network release?

I'd make a guess that there will probably be chroma dots on the t/rs as up until now i've only ever heard of Mind Of Evil 1 that doesn't have them!

No, that was Come Dancing.

I seem to recall the Australian "censor cuts" to Commonwealth Games had been found, so that one should be complete or near-complete. I presume the existing print of "Caught in the Act" has suffered from censorship - of all the Goodies, it's the one most likely to have offended! - but all I've ever seen is a very rough timecoded copy. The Goodies DVD releases are of course few and far between, so who knows when, if ever, restored versions of these two episodes will be generally available. I hope chroma-dottery can be brought to bear if they ever are considered for a release.

I don't know about chroma-dottery etc. I've just watched Caught in the Act on Youtube. OK black and white, but that's perfectly acceptable for me. We only had a b&w tv when I was a teenager anyway! I cannot understand why things are held back because they are not 'of broadcast quality'. This certainly was off sufficient quality to deserve an airing on BBC4 in my opinion.

Having said that, it was disappointing to watch something which had had my class talking all Monday morning after it had been broadcast! Like Monty Python, it has dated horribly - the only interesting things were seeing a few familiar [pretty] faces in the bit parts, and Liz Fraser's remarkable Mae West persona.

Even though I only remember the LWT episodes & the TV 50 repeat of Kitten Kong, I bought the first Goodies DVD & was mostly impressed by it.

The style seemed to vary a fair bit, from quite slapstick to Benny Hill "lite".

I remember some of the off-air Steptoes were repeated in the 1990's.

Series 1 episode 4 definitaley has chroma dots. Even on the low res avi i've got of an aussie repeat, it's got chroma dots on the captions. I also have the complete episode including adverts on vhs off comedy central, but that was before i could trasnfer stuff to my pc. I'm hoping for it to repeated so i can make a digital mpeg-2.

I am unsure about Commonweath games. All i know is that it's got an odd intro, and that the last captions during "goodies are coming for you and you.." are not the usual yellow, and appear dark, wheras the rest of the captions appear white on the kinescope.

Probably the first 4 at least, as Australia and New Zealand didn't get color till 1975, so would of been sent Kinescopes.

Doctor Who stopped being telerecorded in 1974, so that sounds about right.
