There is also a complete list of all missing TISWAS episodes here:
(You need to select the year & then select "view with full description" underneath it. The archive details for that particular episode of TISWAS will be underneath the episode date & details in ruby red. By the way, don't get fooled. The episodes may for 1978-1982 may say "details will be added in the future, but the archive status of these episodes is still listed underneath the episode transmission date). Anyway, here you are:
http://www.tiswasonline.com/episode_guide.php

Yorkshire, that is not true. I compile that page very carefully, and it is NOT a list of missing episodes at all.

It's actually a list of all the episodes (whether they are missing or not). That's the whole point of it.

Yes, some shows do have a field to show they're in the official archives, but even if it doesn't have that field, there are a few cases where the shows exist with collectors.

James2001, these are the OFFICIAL recordings held by Granada Media (the current owners of the ATV archive) as well as some really cranky home video recordings (probably Betamax) taken by one of the site's members, staplingmachine.

James2001, take no notice of the above. The listings detail EVERY edition of Tiswas, whether they survive or not.

We make a note when we KNOW they're in the official archives.

We have some notes on recordings we have collected, but they are not on every edition we have, we're still going through a big backlog of recordings we have (there's about 30+ shows we have), and sticking a note on the database.

I'm sorry you've been misled by Yorkshire.

I also object to this. All of Staplingmachine's recordings are excellent, except for one of them. They're excellent because they come from Betamax, not in spite of it!

One of the first basics in video archiving is knowing that Betamax is a technically superior format to VHS. (No need to argue the popularity of VHS, we know it won in the end.)

We've got a few Tiswas editions that have been recorded from VHS, and the quality is not as good as Staplingmachine's Betamax recordings.

Matthew Butler's own VHS recordings however are very good quality, must have been really well preserved. It's like they were recorded yesterday! It's annoying there's a few jump-cuts in some recordings, but hey, as Tiswas has anything up 90% of its shows wiped (or never recorded in the first place), we're grateful for any recordings!

Thanks for that. It does strike me as odd though that so many episodes aren't listed as officaly existing in the archives. It's farily understandable with the earlier series, as Tiswas is the sort of show that wouldn't have been considered of utmost importance to record or archive, but I'd have thought the later episodes (the last couple of ATV series and the Central episodes) would be more complete in the archives.

I also think it would be good to exploit old Saturday morning shows more, at the most all we ever see are short clips (usually hacked down to widescreen) on clip shows. It would be good nostalgia to see all those old Trevor & Simon sketches and episodes of Chums, or Bro & Bro from What's Up Doc, all things I can remember watching when I was a kid (well, with SM:TV, I was already into my teens, but still....), but are unlikely to be seen again.

They are, pretty much. There's plenty of those recordings about.

Almost every Saturday morning show has been somewhat 'time-sensitive', so it's tricky to repeat them outside of their live context.

You could get away with it for BBC's On The Waterfront and most of Dick and Dom In Da Bungalow.

I was thinking of official archive tapes rather than home made off-air recordings. I'm sure pretty much everything broadcast by the main terrestrials since the late 70s exists somewhere on VHS or Betamax.

Just in case it gets missed in the other thread, the 21/06/1980 episode of the Adventure Game is no longer missing from the archive. The other three episodes listed are still missing.

I'll update the Wikipedia entry accordingly.

it's been completely omitted to mention 'the complete and utter history of britain', with michael palin and terry jones. this has 4 of it's six episodes missing from the archives, and a few sparse filmed inserts which survived in terry jone's personal collection

I'll make the amendment to the Adventure Game asap - I seem to have a complete inability to FTP on my new PC though :(

Re Terry Jones/Michael Palin - does anyone have definite details of transmission dates/missing portions etc?

Complete And Utter: Three recordings exist, I think; two versions of episode 1 exist (one is a t/r of the transmitted version and the other an early reel format - as saved by the director - of an early edit featuring deleted sketches from the first two eps as originally envisaged before they were merged into one episode). The other episode is (I think) an incomplete one but i'm not certain which one it is. I think Gareth R. will know the details for sure though. Are you reading this, Gareth?

Terry Jones also has all the film inserts too.

Is the missing episodes site going to release screen grabs for A for Andromeda and Out of The Unknown ? I really want to see some pics from these returned episodes. Have been waiting a while, with no results to the many e-mails I have sent. I do realize that these things take time, as this sort of archive material is closely looked after, as it should be. If someone could let me know either way, that would be great.

Thanks, Lance.

Peter, i'm not saying that all the episodes listed are the ones that exist/don't exist. All I'm saying is that the ones with the ruby red boxes underneath describing the archive details are the ones that are known to exist to your website team. that's all.
