We've had an enquiry on the website from someone wondering if there is surviving footage of Steve Harley/ockney Rebel's first appearance on TOTP singing 'Judy Teen'.
Not something I know much about but it's from 1974 apparently.
Can anyone help?
Cheers
Stuart

The performance was on the 23/05/74 show, repeated on 30/05, both wiped I'm afraid and as far as I know it doesn't exist in private hands either, I think I have all the lost 1974 performances and this isn't one of them.

No... I think there is one performance of "Mr Soft" that turned up a couple of years or so ago and the often seen "Come Up And See Me" that is all that's left of Steve Harley on TOTP before 1976.
Having said that, there seems to be shockingly little left of Harley and Cockney Rebel on TV from before 1976 which is a real pity.

I agree totally that there is a shockingly small amount of archive Cockney Rebel in existance. How many people on this board have even seen footage of the 'original' band? Most of us will be aware of Make Me Smile from TOTP's when Harley say's "guitar" just before the solo but this is still Rebel mark two with a guitarist rather than the violin player. The Mr Soft performance has only just surfaced after 30 plus years but again this isn't the original line-up except for Stuart Elliot on drums who somehow managed NOT to get fired by Harley!!. Most of the material we're left with is from 1976 onwards which wasn't that memorable. Going back to what is there in the archives of the original band we have Hideaway/My Only Vice (Old Grey Whistle Test 10/2/74) Judy Teen video promo(filmed originally on 16mm around about April 1974) Judy Teen Top of the Pops 23/5/74(this is 8mm footage taken from the TV broadcast with sound added on)and Sebastian (PinkPop festival 3/6/74) Some of the best stuff from the 'Mark 2' Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel would be Bed in the Corner/Big Big Deal (45 show with Kid Jenson 24/10/74) Make Me Smile (Russell Harty Show 7/3/75) and two 30 minute films called Between the Lines and Starfighter which was footage taken of Steve Harley/Cockney Rebel from Hammersmith Odeon 14/4/75) It's all classic material which Harley has no interest whatsoever in releasing.Shame! Please one last thing, this is only a guide to what exists out there.

How many people on this board have even seen footage of the 'original' band? Absolutely NOTHING sadly and that annoys me since as you say, Steve Harley was less interesting from 76 onwards. My Mum actually got to see the original Cockney Rebel live and she says to this day it was one of the best gigs she ever saw. They were noted for being a great live band and the records hold up brilliantly yet visually, it's almost as if they never existed which is criminal and a tragedy.

Quite agree Peter.People seem to only think of Make Me Smile when Cockney Rebel is mentioned.During 1974 they were huge and were a fresh and exciting band that has never (officially)been captured on DVD. Harley unfortunately will never release this stuff and we have to make do with later, inferior live recordings. There's not even books and photos of the original band.A few of Harley circa 1974 but the rest of the band have been neglected somewhat! Nice to hear from a fellow fan thou.

This exists in B&W but is in such bad condition ( picture skew, sticky in parts etc etc) it is unwatchable.
There was a couple of screen grabs posted on the net (can't remember where) Steve Harley had that web site closed down. It was called Orange something.

It's Blue Orange that sent out free DVD's of old Cockney Rebel material until Harley and his management team put an end to it.The Judy Teen TOTP's footage from 23/5/74 was considered lost forever until Blue Orange somehow discovered it. The show on that date was quite unique because of a strike from the 'props' men. None of the bands were allowed to haul their own equipment about so all the groups on that transmission had no drums or keyboards. In the end Cockney Rebel stood in a line with hired guitars(even for the drummer and keyboard player)and performed on TOTP's for the very first time.
