Planet of Giants Episodes 3 & 4 DVD Reconstruction
« Thread Started on Jul 30, 2012, 8:17pm »

Just noticed in the latest The DWM Review for the upcoming DVD release of Planet of Giants that they have recontructed the 'missing' episodes 3 and 4 out of the extant episode 3, CGI and new audio. I know that you guys are probably aware of this but I hadn't noticed a thread, so sorry if I'm repeating anything :)

Not only is this great news, but it's really great to hear that they've actually got William and Carole back on board to reprise their roles :) It's also good to hear that they've done some more CGI work, even more so as it wasn't neccesarily needed for a DVD release, but just added as a pleasant extra :) It certainly gives hope for more recontructions of other missing episodes in the future; it sounds like they've managed to succesfully work to a budget and get a good end result here, though we'll have to wait and see to make our own judgements :)

The CG cat is just a brief enhancement to a couple of scenes. The major part of it (I understand) is basically done by taking sequences from the existing episodes and dubbing over the top of them with the new performances.

Beyond excited to see how this turned out! I imagine it'll consist of a lot of safety wides and back shots! I'm it's a good job though as John Guilor does a very convincing Hartnell, although admitedly it's not as good as his Tom Baker. There is a YouTube video somewhere that makes for an interesting listen.

As long as we get the as broadcast episode 3, I really couldn't care less about these reconstructions. Nice it'll be there as - I trust - an optional extra for those that want it which will be the majority as opposed to the grumpy minority like myself!

I'm more excited about hearing the Arabic dubs of the episodes! As I've noted on my www.BroaDWcast.org website, they sometimes stray from what was in the original English version.

Enough to highlight significant variations from the English script - i.e . the reference in Edge of Destruction to Gilbert and Sullivan being replaced by a name that would be far more familiar to Arabic viewers.

And it was on having those translated that we discovered that the narration actually gives the name of the company that made the dubs; a google search revealed they were based in Lebanon, something which had not been known before. This is explained on the website.

I imagine the very, very, very slim possibility of them holding onto anything from almost fifty years ago has been explored? That's if they are even still in business!

Wouldn't matter if they did.... None of the stories with missing episodes were dubbed into Arabic: that package contained only nine serials, being the run of serials from An Unearthly Child to The Rescue, but excluding Marco Polo and The Reign of Terror, so 40 of the first 53 eps, although parts 2-4 of the first serial didn't go to air.
