I contacted the paley center about some of the Fraggle Rocks. They told me they have no originals. What they used to do is borrow material, make a 3/4 inch original and then make 2 copies for their locations for people to view. (these were 1/2 beta, upgrading to dvd.) They claim they do not take off of dvds but are reluctant to share original sources.

I did ask about the war machines and the person who i spoke with said his system shows they have a 3/4 in tape original. (if I remember correctly).

Thats all I know until i contact the next level of support or paul v hears a response.

@George - That means they have a copy, most likely from Lionheart in the 80s... Original in this case just means that it's the tape that they were sent, not that it's really "original"... All of the originals (read: best existing copies) of these episodes are 16mm Telerecording negatives (or prints if the negs dont exist). The only way a VT would potentially be better than the T/Rs would be if by some miracle someone found one of the original 2-inch quads.

Although there is of course a precedent for quad tapes turning up in the US - the copy of 1984 from 1965 that turned up in the Library of Congress is an NTSC 2" quad tape. It's massively unlikely that a 1960s Doctor Who quad would have made it to the US, but it's not impossible...

Ray just jumped the gun publicising this. It's just a VHS tape from what I have been able to find out.

Many of the Library of Congress 2" tapes were actually telerecordings put onto VT.

@Steve.. I agree.. What their source is we dont know.. Perhaps it came from a film collection that had another 16mm or perhaps it came from lionheart 3/4 inch or the bbc. Whatever they made the copy from, they dont have.

@Chris. More likely its a umatic 3/4 inch and a betamax half inch. I dont think they have vhs but none of these are unfortunately helpful as far as a dr who print is concerned.

My gut on paley is that they are not a library of originals but rather a library of dupes. but they may know where the originals are.

Indeed, but when 1984 was shown at Kaleidoscope last year, it was definitely an interlaced VT source with NTSC motion judder.

Actually, it would probably benefit from Reverse Standards Conversion, if the LoC have the actual quad tape.

So is the 'find' any use at all?
