I'm very happy to eat humble pie and say thanks Bill and Jon for your efforts this weekend.

We've all become a bit jaded by the usual low-life that drop by masquerading as new members and spout nonsense about having this episode or that episode, and no doubt we'll encounter some more of those losers very soon who'll read this thread and see it as a cue to try again, but alas, it seems to go with the territory.

Bill, there are certain key signs that reveal a hoaxer almost instantly, but thankfully the perpetrators aren't clever enough to recognise them. Your posts quite coincidentally and unintentionally displayed just a couple of signs from what's become a rather comprehensive list of hoaxer traits over the years.

Thanks for posting and giving Jon access to have a poke around your collection, and a belated welcome to the forum.

Big thanks to Bill and Jon for their efforts.

It's these kind of leads that could turn up a missing episode anywhere in the world and it really is worth checking out when possible. So more power to Jon for taking the trouble to investigate in person (and so quickly).

So pleased that my first ever post has generated so many pages of discussion too.

It's great that Jon is investigating this, and it's also great that Bill is letting him, after the suspision he has received (don't take it personally Bill, over the years many people have lied about having various episodes). I really hope that something missing is unearthed, even if it's not a dr who, because so much missing tv was sold to New Zealand back in the day.

True, but the film could have been acquired from an overseas seller... Neither Bill nor his mother could really give me any more details about when or where they saw it. Bill might like to jump in here though to explain it some more...?

For all we know, maybe Bill's dad had a friend or two also into 16MM film. That might be a potential lead, but by this point we may be grasping at straws so to speak.

I agree with others. It's good we had it checked out, and thank you Bill for allowing someone to view your collection.

I apologise for my suspicions and for asking if Bill was from Blackpool.

Are we ever going to be allowed to live down the association with that poisonous little git?

(Last I heard he was in Preston. They're welcome to him)

I just wanted to say it was a pleasure to meet Jon. I learned a lot. Thanks for taking the time to help me go through the films. Just sorry that so many of the them are gone.

Giles, "The Crusade" wasn't broadcast in NZ either, but the prints were sent through NZ, and "The Lion" episode turned up here, so it isn't an impossible claim.

My bad - I'd overlooked the fact that The Lion also missed an NZ transmission. It certainly seems a little odd that these stories were sent over (presumably through official channels) and never shown, and yet we've now got a suggestion that at least two of them escaped "into the wild"?

Anyway, just to echo the thanks to Bill for coming forward and to Jon for helping check out the lead.

And even though this particular time it didn't play out, the great thing to take away from this is that sometimes genuine leads do just pop up out of the blue in this way... :)

Once again thanks to Bill and Jon.

Just to clarify Bill, when you says that the prints were thrown out, do you mean that the prints were actually binned or were they donated, sold on, given away etc?

This is a general positive even though it hasn’t led to any material. We’ve all been discussing how we can get the attention of film collectors who are off the beaten track, or families of deceased film collectors who still may have reels. And we attracted the attention of one and got the collection examined in record time, without any fuss or unhelpful publicity. Which may be good for other local collectors to know.

One thing I would be interested in learning, maybe Jon asked, or Bill can answer since he is still posting.
Does Bill remember the episodes from seeing them actually projected on a screen (which would preclude his memories of them just coming from seeing them when they aired on TV—not possible for “Aztecs” in NZ anyway), or did he only see the labels on the film tins?

Thanks Jon and Bill :)

We've got to keep hoping and keep searching ;)

What I would say is that it must have been a fun visit for both Jon and Bill to discover what's in a collection of film 8-)

Thanks again ...

Thanks Jon for taking the time to look at Bills collection (and thanks Bill for allowing Jon to look!) Although it yielded no recoveries, it restores hope that more people like Bill will come forward with film collections...
